Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Lang-Coleman.
Hi Kristen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up, family surrounded me. My grandmother taught me the fundamentals of caregiving and community involvement early. She prepared meals, baked sweets, and provided fresh fruits and veggies from her garden for the “sick and shut-in” of our small community, and I was her delivery girl. I molded relationships and gained wisdom and respect from my elderly neighbors from this experience. The cornerstone of compassion for my community not only prepared me for my healthcare career but for the desire to be a pillar of the community.
I was pregnant at 17. Then, teachers felt pregnant students would end up as drop-outs and never graduate. I went into labor at school because I was determined not to be a statistic. I returned one week later to finish the term. I graduated on time with my class and daughter at my side. Determined to continue my education, I worked full time with a toddler and completed my studies at night. A two-year degree took me seven years to complete, but I did. I slowly climbed the medical ladder. I went from CNA to ADN to BSN to MSN-Ed to CNL-C, NP-BC to a successful Black-Owned Business Woman who owns and operates Morgan Medical Associates. A direct primary care office located in Marietta, Ga, with a primary focus to improve access to healthcare, diversity, equality, and health literacy.
My foundation is what gave me the courage to push through and never give up when the odds were against me.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Not a smooth road at all!
Pregnant at 17.
Struggled through Nursing School.
Was told to switch careers because I couldn’t pass the entrance exam.
Slowly climbed the medical ladder.
Failed marriage due to spousal abuse
Suffered from test anxiety…undiagnosed for years.
Multiple attempts to pass boards (test anxiety).
Spent over 20 years in Corporate America where I was denied promotions, pay raises and opportunities to grow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Morgan Medical Associates is a Direct Primary Care (DPC) office located in Marietta. As a DPC, we don’t focus on insurance. Everyone needs access to healthcare, regardless of whether you have insurance or not. Many have high deductible plans or no health insurance and are sick. We wanted to fix that. So, this office was created to close the gap. We want to ensure everyone, no matter their current commercial insurance status has access to quality care that they can depend on.
We are known for concierge medicine and IV therapy.
What makes us different? Compassion and dedication to our community, despite socioeconomic status.
I am most proud of myself! Overcoming diversity and being here as a role model for young African American females.
I want your readers to know everyone has access to healthcare. I want them to know there are providers here that truly want them to live their best life. I want them to also believe in medicine again. They are not a number at Morgan Medical Associates. I want them to know, It doesn’t matter where you start, as long as you finish.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
People depend on us (medical professionals) to provide evidence-based care.
– They want honesty.
– They don’t want to be another number.
– They want compassion
– They want someone to listen
COVID has taught me to live in every moment and to trust the process. If we stay faithful, God will see us through.
