Today we’d like to introduce you to Norrell Joseph.
Hi Norrell, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a dad of one, a six years old boy, Khai. I was born in the beautiful Caribbean island of Antigua, where I also grew up. I began my career as a journalist working for a local radio station (ZDK Liberty Radio) in Antigua, moved to the USA to pursue tertiary studies, a Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management with a concentration in Destination Tourism Management. While completing my degree, I interned in the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA) New York office which catapulted me into a full-time position with the company.
Since starting with the ABTA almost eight (8) years ago, I served in the roles of Tourism Marketing Officer, Sales Officer and now Sales & Marketing Manager, leading our USA sales team.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m always comfortable with a microphone in front of me therefore Sales wasn’t a hard transition and it certainly makes it easy that I’m representing a destination where I grew up, so an easy sell, haha. I’ve also been able to put some of the marketing concepts I learned at university to use and learn along the way as the industry changes with technology.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
“I’m the man with the golden voice”, some would say. I often get kind compliments after virtual or in person presentations that they “could listen to me all day”. On a more serious note, I’m known as the ‘road warrior’ and the team member that certainly gets things done.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I wouldn’t say I’m a huge risk-taker but I believe anyone who decides to leave everything they know and love, a stable job in pursuit of better opportunities or advancing one’s self in a foreign country is certainly not risk averse.
