Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Turner.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jenna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Custom Cabenna started as a fluke. I was a Special Education teacher and loved it. Once I had my children I realized that my calling was really to be with my own kids as much as possible – that meant missing out on a large portion of our families monthly income – which puts a strain on any family. My husband, the love of my life, is a classic wooden boat builder… it is a very small family business called AristoCraft Boats.
One day, while visiting him at work, I wondered if I could make something out of his leftover wood. I made bits and pieces and decorative things for friends as gifts – we referred to my woodworking as a “hobby” and I worked out of my basement and garage until people started requesting pieces.
One day we were in the car and I started looking up wood pieces on Pinterest and posted things as an example of what I “thought” I could do – within 2 days I had over 200 orders and my mind was racing! In three months, I left my part-time job at a local Church and started Custom Cabenna full time.
We started with small signs, cups and little projects and now I’m making wine and cheese trays, porch décor, small furniture pieces, personalized signs for houses, corporate signs outside of major companies, interior décor for corporations and individuals, palletized walls, farmhouse tables and benches and the list goes on!
I find so much joy in working side-by-side with my husband every day – we bounce ideas off of each other – he laughs at me pretty much all day long when I’m trying to figure something out and completely mess it up. I’ve successfully only caught our shop on fire three times – just small itty bitty fires!
My favorite part of Custom Cabenna is that I am making personal pieces for wonderful clients – everything has a personal touch and I love getting their opinions step-by-step. I have customers that find something at a garage sale or on the side of the road and they bring it to me and ask me to make it look pretty or they have a family heirloom that needs to be fixed up and it makes them so happy to see something special to them look pretty again.
I love that I can leave work to get my kids off of the bus every day – most days they end up coming back to work with us – but it’s a family business so they love being here and helping out!
I have some products in a local store, North Georgia Running Company, that has race medal and bib holders for their runners/walkers. I have a few corporations that I work for and some real estate agents that use Custom Cabenna to make personalized “closing” gifts for their clients… Outside of that, I prefer to stay small and work individually with my clients.
I will never be a millionaire with what I do – but I love making people happy – hearing their stories, listening to what they want and making it for them. I love being with my family and pray that I am able to continue to do Custom Cabenna for as long as possible!
Has it been a smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it has been a “smooth” road – mostly because it “came out of nowhere”. I wasn’t planning on leaving my job – Custom Cabenna really took off and needed more time and attention given to it by me so that it could thrive. It was a very hard decision to leave my job and scary to pursue a dream that I was unsure of. I thought it would be a seasonal “holiday” gift-making job and it has turned out to stay busy and get busier throughout the year! Thank you, Jesus!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Custom Cabenna – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I want everything to be as personal as possible. I like talking to my clients. I like that they can be out shopping and text me a picture of something and say, “I like this but want it to look a little more like this…can you do that…?” and then we go from there.
I specialize in wood products, farmhouse tables, palletized walls, framed out signs, interior and exterior décor, I specialize in making people smile with lovely things they dream about and not charging them an arm and a leg for it!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We are located in North Georgia – we have a stop sign, a tiny town square with one hardware store and a few antique stores. I like that we are a hidden gem that is waiting to be explored.
