Inspiring Conversations with Tanis Simone of Simone’s Sweet Treasures

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanis Simone.

Hi Tanis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My aunts and godmother helped me discover my passion for baking. Whenever we spent the summer together, we would make different tasty treats from yellow cakes to character cakes with unique piping. I loved the creative process from making the batter to baking, to making the icing, and started baking more on my own. My mom ended up giving me a recipe for cheesecake when I was 14 and the rest is history.

Now I must say the first time I made a cheesecake was a total flop, but we all start somewhere, right?

Baking made me feel at home within myself, happy, and calm, and I wanted to share this experience with others. If there was ever any tension my parents or sibling had been experiencing, I would bake which helped spread positivity through the sweetness.

After experiencing the loss of my cousin to domestic violence in 2012 I further realized that discovering your treasure within can be a matter of life and death.

Inspired by a desire to help people see the beauty in themselves, I moved to Atlanta and officially started Simone’s Sweet Treasures in October of 2018. My mission is not only to spread positivity through the sweetness in the kitchen, but also in my community, and to those who may be experiencing domestic violence.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey has been all but easy. A significant part of my struggle has been my personal expectations and pressure to be somewhere I didn’t have to be. It can be difficult to focus on your own journey when you’re witnessing others’ journeys and sometimes wishing to be there. I’m realizing that it’s important to take the time necessary to build something that will last and to be kind and gracious to yourself as you figure it out.

We’ve been impressed with Simone’s Sweet Treasures, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Simone’s Sweet Treasures sells assorted gourmet cheesecakes and cheesecake cups to local small businesses in need of grab-and-go desserts including Fresh Harvest, Cultivate Food and Coffee Restaurant, and Odeko to name a few. We also offer our products directly to customers through monthly bake sales and pop-ups. Each packaged good includes a positive affirmation that serves as a reminder for my customers to treasure themselves through success and adversity.

We are most proud of developing partnerships with local women’s shelters in Georgia to assist survivors of domestic violence with reestablishing emotional, mental, and financial wellness.

We aren’t just a bakery, but a movement to inspire those to discover their own treasure within.
