Today we’d like to introduce you to Dézjah Monique Collections.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Dézjah Monique Collections originally started in 2018 as Dézjah Glitz and Glam Boutique. I was an uprising freshman at Clark Atlanta University and wanted to find a design for my dorm room that would stand out. Upon making these glitter letters for my room and showing them to my dorm sisters, I ended up designing about 50% of my dorm mates room and instantly said this can be my thing. After two years of painting letters, and small canvases, covid-19 happened in 2020 and the demand for the art industry went up! I decided then that it was time for a change and to rebrand my company to what’s known now as Dézjah Monique Collections. My amazing company focuses on not only custom art, but bedazzled tumblers, resin artwork, and even Sip and Paint courses. Little did I know that investing my time in teaching classes and attending pop-up shops during a global pandemic will skyrocket my business and clientele. Now to this day, I am making 3 times more than what I anticipated and traveling for my services!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur and especially an artist has not been a smooth road at all. One of the main struggles I had was staying consistent in sharing my craft despite the lack of sales. There are lots of down seasons within this industry especially because people gravitate to art mostly during the summer when school begins and students are transitioning or someone moving into a new home. Another struggle I faced through the years was thinking simple-minded. When I first started my company I was doing it for fun and not taking it seriously so the presentation of myself and the company lacked decorum to where opportunities provided to me wasn’t fulfilled due to my lack of knowledge and preparation for what and where my gift can take me. I never expected to make it this far and it showed from the way I talked and presented myself and brand. Another major struggle I faced was not having a mentor within this industry to guide me with the hardships of being a young entrepreneur. It took a lot of molding to get me this confident in my business now through other people’s experiences and journeys. If I didn’t wish for anything else, I wish I had a mentor within this industry to show me the proper tools in navigating life as an upcoming artist.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My company specializes in all custom art including but not limited to clothing, canvas, keychains, paddles, ornaments, and more. The product I specialize in that I am most known for and proud of is my custom jeans and corsets. I think my creativity and authenticity when painting these pieces set me and my company apart. It’s a style you don’t just find anywhere or can duplicate, you would have to study every detail to master my exact piece and I love that it’s so original that it becomes hard to duplicate even for myself.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory I would say goes back to fourth grade when I entered my first art competition. I would sketch up little things and enter them through my school art program and this particular year my hand-drawn picture placed third place in the Clayton county art competition. To win against high schoolers and middle schoolers at that time allowed me to believe drawing was my passion and I look at myself now 13 years later saying wow, younger me would be so proud to see how far I’ve come from drawing nature in a sketchbook, to now painting walls and clothing for a living. I never would’ve thought that moment would pass and mean as much as it do to me now as I’m living that dream!
