Conversations with Kris Lundy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Lundy.

Hi Kris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hair has always been my passion, but became my purpose! I started braiding when I was 12 and had no clue it would bring me to where I am now. I was always the girl that changed my hairstyles and hair colors and that would draw people to me. Once I graduated high school, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur in the beauty industry so I tried different skills such as weaves, makeup and even lashes but it just didn’t stick. I started braiding my own hair and a co-worker suggested I braid as a side hustle. I declined until she asked me to do her hair, which I did and it was full throttle from there. I was working a corporate job at the time and started taking clients but there was just not enough hours in the day. I finally said ” I quit ” started braiding full time and never looked back. It was a journey because I went through periods where I doubted myself and thought ” maybe I should go back to work and get a 9-5 ” but I would’ve been miserable. I liked my freedom and liked the feeling of making money on my on and feeling proud. I’ve remained consistent and true to myself even through the storms and now the consistency and dedication is paying off.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely NOT been a smooth ride! I go through slow seasons, or what I like to refer to as “droughts”. That is when clientele isn’t coming in as consistently. At first, I was not prepared for this. I was spending my money as fast I was making it and not saving. So when those droughts came, I was scrambling and doubting my abilities. Running your own business is not peaches and cream all the time, I’ve cried A LOT and I’ve made several mistakes but I knew I couldn’t stop because I was closer to success than I was my starting point.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am not a braided but THE BRAIDER. I specialize in knotless braids but I’m known for my fun and flirty style (even a little spicy if you want to add some color) The Boho knotless braid. I’m most proud of the fact that I am self-taught, but I don’t keep myself in a box. I’m constantly building my skill set and learning new and trendy techniques but also staying true to the true essence of braids which is a solid foundation and true protective style.

What sets me apart from other braiders is ME. My light shines bright and these ladies get a therapist and a hairstylist in one. I love to speak life into these women and share my experience because nothing we go through is in vain it is to help someone else. I’ve created a safe space for women to pour out to me and cry if they need to, laugh if they want to and just not be judged. I want every woman to leave my chair not only feeling beautiful but also feeling empowered!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
This is Atlanta there are so many creatives and professionals that I think we all can learn from, More specifically find someone that is already doing what it is you want to do and learn from them.
