Today we’d like to introduce you to Shon Flame.
Hi Shon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born Deshon Jefferson on June 23, 1982 in Norfolk, VA. Raised in a big family whose roots are split between Atlanta and Norfolk, I shuttled back and between the south side of Norfolk in Virginia and Palmetto, Riverdale & College Park in Georgia.
Family, sports, money and music were my only internet since a toddler. As with most black southern families, religion was omnipresent but being a per who thinks in layers eventually leaned towards the spiritual title. Choosing to believe more of what I feel, see and comprehend as opposed to what’s been diluted misused and propagandized. Energy and Vibes are pure so that’s where I choose to tap into. Living life actively tapping into people’s energies and vibrations produce an insane about of byproduct in the form of empathy that compels me to act, not only when presented the opportunity but creating situations in conjunction with every entertainment and business move that my team and I are involved with.
As a teen having national talent and ambition, I protected my craft and landed a record deal with Spit Records / Def Jam Recordings by age 19. A record deal that would never see the light of day on account of me being arrested for armed robbery one week prior to signing day. Sentenced to 20 years in a Virginia state prison, not once did I even consider that my dreams and goals were in attainable. Devastated yes but equally if not slightly more motivated. So I studied the music and entertainment industries specifically and Business in general. Started a label while incarcerated with my brother and business partner Pj_theSupastar and signed and released acts even recording from prison and released projects.
Upon release in November 2019, I released my debut Ep “Shon Flame Ep”, a compilation mixtape featuring my labels Roster. Titled “sex drugs and trap music 2” we had the opportunity to partner with Rob J and feature his song what I like with Dababy on the compilation mixtape is part of cross-promotion efforts. I’ve partnered with the Drive To Live Foundation, Inc to help further their cause with awareness and fundraising via our events and appearances. Recently released my latest single, “2 to 3 Grams” ft. Pj the Supastar. It’s getting a lot of attention from commercial radio plays, regional tv appearances and festival bookings. The title of my upcoming Project is “It’s A Vibe” and good vibes only is what I champion.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has been challenging at times. Resources or the lack thereof has been a major hurdle. You can have the fastest most beautiful car in the world but if you don’t put gas in it you’ll never get anywhere.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Hip Hop is my main genre as an artist, but I’m also an RnB and Pop songwriter. So I’m always in both spaces artistically and the blend is translated through my music. I try to give a unique but universal vibe to my records.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Stay in the mix. Stay outside. Social media is cool but the face-to-face interactions are more tangible.
