Conversations with Tyler McConner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler McConner.

Hi Tyler, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Ty from Detroit, Mi. I have been doing hair ever since I can remember. I was always interested in the hairstyles that my mom would give me and wanted to do them on my doll’s head. I was 4 or 5 years old when she taught me how to do corn rolls and other cute little styles! That later turned into doing hair for family and friends.

I became interested in Locs around that time as well. The 90s were very Afrocentric— and I come from a family that is very Pro-Black and full of Musicians, so I saw my share of Dreadlocks (now, Locs) and always wanted my hair that way someday. Leading up to turning 14, I did as much research on Locs as I could before getting my first set. I learned different starting methods, the different ways to tighten and retwist, texture types, etc and from there I began to do my own Locs because in Detroit at the time people were only doing “Dreads” in their living rooms and those people were hard to find! That made me start doing Locs for other people when they’d ask about my hair. The start was there and the learning has continued!

My background has been Music and Technology for the good majority of my life and adult life but the Pandemic changed a lot of things for me spiritually and I found that it was time to give my all into things that I’m great at and hair has always been a gift of mine! I love making people happy, I love showing and sharing my craft and hair is one of those things that make people feel beautiful! The reactions of my clients is what make me happy!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I believe building a clientele for people new to the industry or those who have moved markets is one of the biggest struggles. That has been the bumpiest part of the road thus far! Though I have been living in Atlanta for almost 10 years, I had to build up like everyone else!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Master Loctician that specializes in Loc Maintenance and Natural Hair Care. I offer Loc Detox, Coloring, Hot Oil Treatments, Styles and Retwist. As well as Twist, Individual Braids, Spring Twist, Marley Twist (for example) on Loose Hair that is not locked.

I am very informative, open to questions and I take my time with each client to assure the best service!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk taking is necessary in any form of business. You have to be accepting of putting yourself out there in order to achieve the success that you want! No matter how uncomfortable the thought might be. There is no traction without action!
