Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Jones.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Planejayne, I’m a Singer/Songwriter from Miami, FL. (Born and Raised) I took an interest in music at a very young age. Of course, church played a major role in my upbringing, not only did I grow up in church, but I was also a part of the Chorus. I fell in love with all the notes it took to make a song whole and complete. The melodies it takes to give the listener’s ears a treat, I loved how one song could make someone feel free, revived or just wanting to move their body. As I got older, I realized the music I grew accustomed to listening to. It was missing something, Missing the magic, the sensational, overwhelming feeling of love. Love in music makes you want to experience love, give love and/or be more open to receiving it. It allows listeners to hear your heart, activating theirs. Music is more than just a good beat or bass, my music gives an experience. Everything flows and works together to make magic. I always loved writing, everything from poetry, songs, and lyrics to books, so why not put it to use. I began picking up my pen and letting love transcend from the tip of it and create the experience you hear today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t know about smooth, but definitely a LONG road. Being from Miami in itself is a whole other conversation. As an Rnb/soul artist, you can’t just perform at a local club because that’s not the type of music they wanna hear while they tryna get drunk and twerk lol. Everything nowadays is so fast it can sometimes feel like, so trying to slow the world down a little bit through music is definitely not the easiest thing to do. I have to remind myself constantly to PUSH! (Pray until something happens) but also to make sure my hustle matches my faith. Putting my name out there any way I can, whether it’s performing at open mics, local events, singing in my car on social media, or just word of mouth. I don’t believe this journey is supposed to be easy, but I do believe one day it’ll be all worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do music! If I had to pick one category for now it’s definitely Soul. That’s what sets me apart. The Rnb/soul world of music is more so secluded I feel. Everybody wants to be a City Girl or City Boy, it’s not many lovers. But my hopes are still high that the love just needs to be ignited. People don’t know sometimes what they need until they have it, or in my case (until they hear it). It’s okay to be young, sexy, and independent but still want to be a wife, married or still want to be in a relationship, respect your relationship and honor your partner. I’m young now but if I keep living I will get old, and I don’t know about you but I don’t want to grow old alone. (Genesis 2:18)
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I haven’t really found a mentor, however, I would say who you want to become and the image you put out is up to you. I’m very careful and sure about the things I do and the people I collab with. Find people who respect you and your craft, there is a community for everybody, you just have to find yours. Dig it out! I started looking up local lounges or open mics and through their experiences, I’ve connected with people more so in my world. And definitely social media, attracting and not chasing. Putting your work and craft out there and allowing that to bring in like-minded individuals who hold the same love of music as I do.
