Meet Jeannell Darden of Moisture Love in Southwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeannell Darden.

Jeannell, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My mom taught me to style hair as a child and I fell in love with it. I actually thought, I would be a stylist vs. going to college but my grandfather encouraged me to get a degree. In my senior year or high school, I colored my hair 2 weeks after my mother gave me a relaxer and my hair broke off and kept breaking for the next 3 years. While at Georgia Tech, I enrolled in an African American Entrepreneurship class. I read Madam CJ Walker’s Book. My desires to have a beauty business re-emerged, I decided to cut off my broken hair, go natural and start my own product line. It was a process from that point until I launched, mainly trying to gain the courage to get started. In the summer of 2011, my eldest daughter started hating daycare where I left her to work for another family run company. I had another epiphany and decided that I could no longer work to build someone else’s business while my child is uncomfortable. So, I quit my job and launched my business over the next 2 months!

Has it been a smooth road?
Whoa no it hasn’t. As the CEO I’ve suffered illness and lost, I’ve had to care for other ill family members, I’ve made poor business decisions, hired the wrong people, waited to long to fire others. The list goes on, but I’m fully aware that it’s part of the growing process and has made me stronger.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Moisture Love – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company focuses on moisture. There are a ton of hair care companies out there today and a lot of them are for curly hair. We set ourselves apart by formulating products that offer maximum hydration and moisture for curly hair. I’ve created a proprietary Hydralure Technology that infuses hydration into the hair on a cellular level for deeper longer lasting moisture penetration. I’m most proud of our Gentle Embrace Hydration Shampoo. It cleanses the hair without stripping it. Most people love how they can detangle their hair with while shampooing.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that Atlanta has such a large amount of educated and gainfully employed African Americans that aren’t only in service roles but engineers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc. I think we need to do a better job of taking care of our homeless and mentally ill population. I see a number of women, men and children on the streets daily and I often find myself wanting to know their story and how did they get to be where they are.
