Misty, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey to owning a Tutor Doctor franchise started in my own home. I am a mom of three teenage/young adult children. My children have very different academic strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. I tried a variety of tutoring models and homework help for my children through the years. I found that one-on-one, in-home tutoring was the best fit for my family. Individual tutoring not only improved my children’s grades and confidence, it actually improved my relationship with them. Tutoring took the tears and frustration out of homework time and the tension out of report card time in my home.
After 21 years as a civil litigation paralegal, I set my heart on owning my own business instead of working for someone else. I began to explore the world of franchise ownership with the help of Leslie Kuban at Fran Net. When I was presented with the model and values of Tutor Doctor there was an instant connection because I knew from personal experience the effectiveness of one-on-one tutoring.
I now have the joy of not only local business ownership but also the satisfaction of helping students and families reach their goals be their very best.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My biggest challenge was learning the financial and administrative side of business ownership. I came from the legal world, not corporate America, so my learning curve was steep. Thankfully, I received lots of support from Tutor Doctor home office.

My plans are to continue to grow my business and help more students have academic success. I especially enjoy helping high school juniors and seniors get into the college of their choice through excellent test prep and academic tutoring to ensure their personal best GPA.
