Community Highlights: Meet Anner Turner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anner Turner.

Hi Anner, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my entrepreneurial path as a Mary Kay consultant in February 2000. Since my life was taking a different turn due to my failure to win the pink Cadillac, I decided to change the course of my entrepreneurial adventure. When my mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness in 2019, I was left wondering how to make a living while caring for my mother. For more than 20 years in corporate America, I worked in sales, marketing, customer service, and executive support, and I carefully considered how I could apply my knowledge to a firm. After more than 15 years in administrative support and six years as a real estate secretary, it felt natural to launch a virtual assistant business with a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management and a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resource Management.

As you may be aware, some technologies were developed and produced during the pandemic to improve monetary benefits, life balances, independence, and other aspects of people’s lives. Because of the widespread utilization of technology, it is now possible to meet the public’s need for food convenience and variety caused by fast-paced lifestyles at a relatively low cost. Globally, online food delivery is rapidly expanding. However, public awareness of food nutritional quality appears to be declining. As a result, consumers must monitor their food and nutrition intake to avoid deteriorating health and developing diseases.

I became aware of a nutritional problem within her immediate circle, prompting her to take action. I grew up in Alabama, where she ate delicious, hearty meals with her family. However, seeing her friends and family eat unhealthy foods made her reconsider her unhealthy habits. Anner changed her lifestyle as she learned more about nutrition, beginning with a 21-day fast with a childhood friend in January 2021.

So, after some thought, we founded Southern Belle Gardens and developed our first product, Southern Belle BBQ sauce, to achieve our goals while enjoying meals. It is a delicious sauce with fresh ingredients such as turmeric and ginger. Because it is low in sodium and sugar, it is ideal for people who want to reduce their salt and sugar intake and make healthier choices. Furthermore, people frequently underestimate the number of sauces they consume. They may select a more nutritious meal but include a lot of flavor enhancers. For example, one tablespoon of ketchup contains about four grams of sugar, while one tablespoon of barbecue sauce contains about five grams.

The sugar in these condiments is considered high because the daily sugar intake should be around 30 grams on average, and one tablespoon is not the size these sauces are consumed. Sugar consumption is one of the significant issues that Southern Belle Gardens wishes to address. Moreover, it can cause high blood pressure, inflammation, weight gain, diabetes, and fatty liver disease, which can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While starting a business can be difficult, the process is more accessible and more satisfying when you trust God, believe in your goal, and follow the steps. Because I am a doer, being intentional, genuine, and upbeat comes naturally to me, so challenges become blessings.

Southern Belle Gardens promotes healthy eating habits and hopes to develop more organic and healthy products soon to expand the brand. Admittedly, the creators hope to have their products on the shelves of local grocery stores within the next five years. Southern Belle Gardens will undoubtedly make great strides in the industry with its inspiring advocacy for healthier options.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Southern Belle BBQ Sauce’s founders intend to expand and grow the brand on a much larger scale in the coming years so that the next few years will be quite exciting. They intend to develop a broader range of healthy options that will still include organic and healthy ingredients. The two also hope to expand the brand’s distribution to more grocery and health food stores across the country.

Turner and Johnson hope that Southern Belle BBQ Sauce will become a household name in the near future.
