Conversations with Jasmine Carr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Carr.

Hi Jasmine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started selling makeup in 2017. When the pandemic hit it gave me time to teach myself how to do graphic logos. I would be on YouTube for hours trying to figure out how to rebrand my business. I got the idea to start incorporating black culture into my cosmetics and from there I started doing themed collections. There are plenty of brands who do collections inspired by pop culture but I never seen a brand do makeup collections inspired by black culture, that is when I knew the direction I wanted my business to go in. I did a collection inspired by the movie Friday, Black Hair Products, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as well as a collection inspired by the early 2000s. My “Don’t Touch My Hair collection” ended up going viral and blessed me with the opportunity to be featured in Essence Magazine. After that they I knew I had invested my hard work and time into something that turned out to be so beautiful and rewarding. Since I have rebranded my business in the last year my sales have skyrocketed to the point where sometimes it’s unbelievable, it’s such a beautiful feeling to watch something you built finally get the recognition it deserves. In the upcoming 2023 I plan on dropping more makeup collections that will tap into are universal black experiences and nostalgia.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Entrepreneurship is far from easy. When I first started out, I had little to no support and I had no idea what I was doing. I either had too much inventory or not enough inventory. I never saw a huge turnaround in sales until AFTER I rebranded my business. When I first started my business, it would take me a month to see at least $400 in sales. That is a reminder of how far I have came with my business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in cosmetics and I have a passion for makeup. To me makeup is kinda like a form of art, it goes hand & hand with hair, nail, etc. It’s that one thing that makes women happy. I’m known for creating themed collections inspired by black culture. I would say I’m most proud of is my business going viral and blessing me with the opportunity to be featured in Essence magazine. I would say the thing that sets me apart from others is my willingness to be myself and to think outside the box. No matter what is trending or what another brand does I will continue to incorporate black culture into my business.
