Check Out Nova Jay’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nova Jay.

Hi Nova, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I actually started modeling on accident. I had never wanted to model. I went to school for fine arts, I wanted to be a studio artist and paint like Kerry James Marshall. One day someone asked me to be in a photo shoot and I did it, the pictures kind Of blew up and the next thing I knew I was getting booked for shoots left and right.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely not a smooth road. Being a model is more taxing than most people think it is. You have to get comfortable with hearing “no”.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a published model. I’m currently independent. I’m most proud of my growth creatively, I’m nowhere near where I was two years ago. What sets me apart is my approach to modeling. Modeling to me is not just vanity, it’s an art except I’m the canvas. I view myself as the art.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice to anyone starting out is to just go, literally just start. No one is going to hand it to you. Book a photoshoot, take some pictures in your bedroom and post them, do whatever you need to but you have to start somewhere.
