Today we’d like to introduce you to Latrell Floyd.
Hi Latrell, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started with Talks with Trell when the Pandemic started. I was home and I had time to actually pay attention to what was going on in the world and what people were doing (more specifically people of color) in my community. Nobody was acknowledging this so I decided to use my platform to highlight them by doing virtual interviews and I created a blog which eventually became Talks with Trell. I interviewed business owners, models, fashion designers, and Emmy Award-winning Journalists and producers. Once my interviews picked up, I expanded after graduating with my second Master’s degree. I went “Mainstream” and started informing people on what was going on in the entertainment industry on Instagram. I created an interactive segment called “Rap vs Pop” where I pick a random year and I pick a rap song and pop song and I have people pick which one is the best. I also do “Beth’s Playlist” where I have my musical friend put together playlists for any road trip, shower concert, or just vibes. I also have “Kee’s Kitchen” where my foodie friend gives her top recommendations for best food places while on vacation or “holes in the wall” Recently, I have expanded to TikTok where I do “Did Y’all Know” where I give facts that not many people would know about different things in the entertainment industry. I have half of a million likes on the platform so far, even celebrities such as Missy Elliott and Christy Carolson Ramono have acknowledged “Talks With Trell” and people want more.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been such a smooth road. Of course with creating something from scratch it isn’t going to just blow up that second. At first, I couldn’t get anyone to do interviews with me and when I would nobody would read my interviews. It was disappointing. Even on Tiktok, I wasn’t reaching my audience. With this being something I am passionate about and creatively involved in it was a major letdown. I really wanted to give up, but my friends reminded me that this is a part of the process and I was reminded of some of the GOATs like Oprah and Tyler Perry had slow starts too but they never gave up. If they could do it so can I. So I became super focused and motivated and the work started to pay off.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I currently work in Human Resources and I am over Marketing and Recruiting where I interview applicants and I make sure all of our indeed pages look as marketable as possible. My second job is I am a Digital Communications Manager for an education firm where I oversee employees and interns “NEXTerns” as they grow in social media marketing across the country for conferences, leadership development sessions, etc.
What I am most proud of is graduating as a first-generation college student 3 times. I would also say one of my biggest accomplishments would be writing a cover story for my university paper. I became the first Person of Color to accomplish this in my university’s history. I would also like to add that I have had the opportunity to interview Emmy Award winners. Professionally that was a major milestone for me and very inspiring.
What sets me apart from other people is my drive and ambition. I believe I can make anything happen because I set goals and I make sure I achieve them some way somehow. I don’t take no for an answer.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Mentors are very important to have, the advice and motivation I get from my mentor is second to none. She inspires me daily to get up and make something happen. Networking is also important as well. You never know who you will meet or who is connected to who. That’s how I was able to interview all of people I did because I networked and met people in person and virtually. I actually met a fashion designer who put me in contact with the Emmy Award winner and we were able to build a professional relationship. I say this with my chest all the time, “Put yourself out there!”
