Hidden Gems: Meet Kyle Bishop of Flanagan’s & The Half Moon Pub

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Bishop.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After finishing college, I was unsure which professional path I wanted to take. I worked as a substitute teacher/high school football coach at my alma mater while I pursued a master’s degree. However, it didn’t take long to realize I was ready to be out of school for good. I finished up the school year substituting and coaching but then moved on from the school system. A few months later, I was injured in a snowboarding accident. While I was recovering, a friend of mine invited me down to Savannah to help run her newly established business. After spending nearly two years helping and learning from her, I set out on my own. The first business I acquired was Flanagan’s. It wasn’t my ideal business but it looked like an opportunity I could capitalize on. During the restoration process, I developed a passion for the business world. That was almost 18 months ago and I’ve since added two other businesses to the portfolio.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it wasn’t a smooth road. There were many challenges along the way. Everything from financing problems to licensing setbacks. The main struggle was staying motivated and hungry for success. It was tough not getting discouraged when everything seemed like it was going wrong. When you’re out on your own, there isn’t a boss or a coach to help you keep going. The business accomplishments begin and end with you. Waking up and bringing the energy every day was my biggest challenge.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Flanagan’s is a bar located in downtown Athens, GA. It is located a couple of blocks from the University of Georgia’s campus. It is one of the longest-tenured bars in Athens. It has a good mix of older patrons during the day and college kids at night. Flanagan’s is a laid-back setting with a mostly southern clientele. You can expect the staff to be friendly and courteous and the music to be some of the best country there is.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The best advice would be to do your research to fully understand the industry you are pursuing. And have a good lawyer and accountant to guide you. Good people in your corner is a huge asset that will keep you on the correct path.
