Exploring Life & Business with Tricia Salmon Anderson of HCH Primary Care Clinic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tricia Salmon Anderson.

Hi Tricia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am currently a Family Nurse Practitioner operating a Primary Care Clinic that also provides house call visits for the disabled and home-bound patients. I immigrated to the United States at age 18 and started off as a certified nurse assistant (CNA) and a Patient Care Technician (PCT). I attended Georgia Perimeter College for my prerequisite courses and subsequently obtained my Associate’s (2007) and Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Macon State College. I started off working as a Critical Care Nurse at Grady Memorial Hospital. During my years working in the ICU, I realized that there was a deficit in primary care in certain communities.

For example, hypertensive emergency was one condition we saw a lot of especially in black males. In caring for many of these patients, I learned that they were never diagnosed with hypertension or received any health coaching, Primary or Preventative Care. This led me to decide to go back for my Master in Science specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2014. Obtaining my Masters as a FNP would allow me to educate and help bridge healthcare disparities that certain ethnic groups were facing. I ultimately completed my Doctorate in Nursing Practice in 2017, at which point I decided to open up a practice doing only Housecalls. As the housecall practice grew, I decided to also open a physical location to serve the surrounding communities around Lithonia/Decatur areas. Our Clinic is called HCH Primary Care which stands for HealthCare at Home (HCH). Over the last few years, we have been able to serve our community helping to decrease the lack of access to care in the surrounding area. In addition to Primary Care, we have added Wellness services the promote proactive preventive care.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been easy because as a Nurse Practitioner in Georgia, our practice is limited by antiquated rules that limit us to practice at the highest level of our training/education. For example, Georgia is the most restrictive State in the US when it comes to Nurse Practitioner practice. Thus, I am sometimes not able to provide the care or services that some of our patients require. For example, even though we operate as PCPs NPs cannot write for diabetic shoes. We also cannot certify handicap parking stickers.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about HCH Primary Care Clinic?
Healthcare at Home (HCH) Primary Care Clinic is a hybrid practice that provides primary and wellness care in our clinic as well as home visits. We believe that healthcare should be centered around your needs and aim to provide top-class, comprehensive, and effective primary care.

Services offered include Primary Care, Weight Loss and IV hydration.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For anyone starting out, know that you can make a difference. Despite the obstacles compassionate, comprehensive primary care is needed to help eliminate healthcare disparities.
