Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Barbee-Wilson.
Hi Jean, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
To make a long story short – GOD said move to Georgia. I said what, who and why Georgia. He said do it. I obeyed. I worked in healthcare as an operations manager, regional director, with a background as a registered nurse. I did the same in Georgia for half the salary and double the expenses. With no prior plan to move, we (my husband Bruce and I) had a home we could not sell because of the market crash during the time (2008). Being obedient, we traveled to GA 6-7 times to look for the home He planned for us. We met a very professional and well-respected realtor while out-hitting the pavement on our own. She became our realtor and mentioned that I had a knack for real estate and that I should consider it as a career. I thought no more of it and then my sister came to visit and said the same thing. Again, I thought no more of it; because at the time, I was working in governmental healthcare as an auditor. I received several promotions in a short time and became the Deputy Chief for the State of Georgia’s Department of Community Health, Facilities Regulation Division. In that role, I oversaw all licensing and compliance for all healthcare facilities in the state of Georgia. It was at that time, during the last quarter of the year, my then Pastor was preaching a sermon about finishing the year strong. My husband turned to me and said just do it.
I was baffled, not knowing what he was referring to; so I said – do what? He said go to real estate school. I was totally caught off guard. I said why would I do that? I’m a registered nurse; working in a role previously only held by attorneys. He said because you would enjoy it and be great at it. So of course, I went to school in the evenings after work; and passed the exam with ease. I now had my real estate license, registered nurse license; and still had the responsibility of role with the state. It took almost 3 years before I could leave the job; to start working in the field that has brought me the greatest fulfillment. Although there was fulfillment in assisting and managing my team/s and patients in healthcare; the joy and fulfillment I receive with assisting families needing a trusted advisor with buying and selling real estate is immeasurable. I immediately soared into levels that were unheard of for someone with no experience. Veteran and new agents would ask me what am I doing to get so much business; and my response was and still is – I serve the people. Just serve the people. Don’t chase the dollar; be ready to plug into the needs of the people and the blessings will follow. I have no specific goal for the number of transactions; or how much I want to make at a given time. I just ask GOD – Lord, who are we serving today?
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t said that it’s been difficult. The struggle I have is fitting into the regular business concept of real estate – because I have no specific volume goal – monetary or transaction. Of course, I thoroughly enjoy the monetary rewards and accolades I receive; but it’s not my reason for being here. My challenge is currently to start looking at this line of work as the opportunity to have an even greater impact with my clients, their friends and family; and the many agents I have come to be a resource for. So I must now be focused on putting processes in place that will allow me to serve even more people -clients and fellow agents.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in providing guidance to sellers and buyers of real estate. I’m known for being a person of integrity, knowledgeable and resourceful, who provides great service to all I encounter. I’m known to operate around all of metro Atlanta at all price points. And I’ve always been told that I can walk into any room and be able to effectively capture the people in the room. From multi-millionaires to entry-level wage earners; to someone who can’t figure out their purpose. I am able to connect and have a mutually enjoyable time with all.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I believe the real estate industry will continue to thrive, especially in the metro Atlanta area. The increased presence of the film industry has had a major impact in our local markets; which I believe will continue over the next decade or so.
