Exploring Life & Business with Elizabeth McCane of The Phlebotomy Institute of Middle GA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth McCane.

Hi Elizabeth, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a motivational speaker, successful entrepreneur and community leader who has been featured in media outlets such as 13WMAZ and 41NBC. I am a proven change agent and started McCane Labs in 2019, which quickly developed into a multi-million dollar laboratory. Originally a Chicago native, I also developed and launched a postsecondary institution, The Phlebotomy Institute of Middle Georgia, where I train people in phlebotomy, medical assistance and CPR/First Aid certification.

I originally wanted to teach but instead chose nursing as a vocation while still in high school. It just came as second nature. I decided early on that it could work for me. Pregnancy disrupted graduation but I was undaunted. I am proud to be married to my amazing husband Arthur McCane, and a mother to three beautiful and amazing children. I eventually in 2007 landed in Macon, Georgia with my family and the intention of making my mark in Middle Georgia.

After applying twice to teach at Central Georgia Technical College the second time proved to be a charm and I used my time there as an instructor to jump-start training future Phlebotomists. In 2013, I was renting a conference room at a North Macon hotel. In 2017 I opened a fully accredited and licensed school that trained 90-100 students a month. I had a plan, and I was determined to manifest it in the earth. My plan was and still is, to help women that looked like me. I offer a course that allows the average person a chance to gain a skill that would change their lives.

In 2019, I wanted to do more, and I knew I could do more. I had a desire to not just train women of color and others but provide a place of employment after completion of certifications. So, I decided to open McCane Labs. The business took off and in time contracted with the likes of LabCorp and Quest. McCane Labs does Drug and DNA Testing. Blood testing and Gender Reveal Testing for expecting moms. The average cost for testing is $30.00 and patients don’t need insurance or a doctor’s order. The laboratory is located at 1546 Rocky Creek Road but is also mobile as needed.

Like other businesses, McCane Labs was impacted greatly by the COVID outbreak with business slowing down because of it. But I secured a contract to test patients for COVID on a trial basis with a local church and was so successful I was awarded the contract for the duration of the church’s testing period. At the height of the pandemic, McCane Labs employed sixty-five people in billing alone. My total workforce was comprised of 150 employees in two states.

The payment reimbursement process caused a 6-month delay in compensation for McCane Labs employees, but they stayed the course. They were deeply committed. I found out what we had in them during this period. When the funds did arrive, it was really game-changing. At one-point McCane Labs was making a million dollars a month from COVID testing; becoming the foundation of my other endeavor the Macon Millionaire Bosses.

As an overnight millionaire, I felt compelled to create others. I hosted an event in February 2022 featuring three Atlanta millionaires and local panelists sharing with attendees their secret sauce that led to success. I never met a millionaire that looked like me prior to God blessing me like this, so I wanted to show others that if a child of a mother that was on crack and a dad I never met until I was 23 could make it so could they. I believe I am an industry-changing, revenue-building, performance-boosting change expert and I am the proud founder of the Macon Millionaire Bosses Conference. I am determined to show others how to manifest their millions and their visions.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
During this journey, there has been many obstacles, but we constantly overcome them. Some of the contracts that we signed with McCane Labs, we had to wait six months or more for the funding, so those who were employed with us had to trust me and walk by faith with me. I am so thankful for my team because many of them stayed with me during that duration without pay as long as six months, but when the money was released to us it was worth it because they got paid in huge amounts for their time and work.

When I first started this journey of entrepreneurship, I was working my business and working three jobs. I was determined to get my family where I saw us in my head. There were many days I was tired, and most important events in my children’s life I missed because I was working; but now I can say it was all worth it. A challenge I had in the beginning was paying people more than what the job consisted of, and it affected me negatively in the end. There was a strong level of unappreciation there, and I realized I had to stop doing that. It is a reason pay rates are where they are, and I had to come to terms with it. Another challenge for me was firing people, but I left that job to my husband because I just want to see people win and help as many people as I can.

The Phlebotomy Institute of Middle GA was founded in 2015 by Elizabeth McCane. This is a fully accredited institution that provides healthcare training and certifications in the Middle Georgia area. The Phlebotomy Institution of Middle Ga is located at 1544 Rocky Creek Road in Macon, Georgia. We are currently providing Phlebotomy Technician Training and will be providing Medical Assistant Training soon.

What’s next?
When it comes to the future, I plan to plant other labs and institutions in other cities and states and also reach the billionaire status. I also plan to help as many people as possible manifest their millions.
