Rising Stars: Meet Joi Kyles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joi Kyles.

Hi Joi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I was a young child, about kindergarten age, I remember having a strong passion for art. In elementary/middle school, I started exploring the world of baking. When I would watch baking shows like Cake Boss, I realized that I could combine my love for art and my love for baking together.

As a teenager, I began to teach myself how to decorate cakes and work with different mediums like buttercream and fondant. I fell in love with cake decorating and even more in love with cake sculpting. Sculpting cakes truly gave me the opportunity to express myself artistically. That lead to my passion for making hyperrealistic cakes. Hyperrealistic cakes are my favorite thing to create. I love to see people’s reactions and how much joy they bring to people around the world!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not by any means. Cake sculpting isn’t easy. Learning to work with different edible materials can be a huge challenge. And you can’t just take an eraser and start over like I do when I draw. It has come with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (literally). I’ve had cakes fall apart, I’ve dropped cakes, I’ve messed up recipes, and the list goes on. But those bumps in the road were necessary. Every failure has taught me monumental lessons and brought me where I am today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in cakes that look like regular objects. Like a life-size mailbox or a potato in the grocery store. My hyperrealistic cake decorating style definitely sets me apart from other bakers. I’m most proud of competing on Cooking Channel and Food Network at the age of 22. That was a lifelong dream of mine, and to accomplish it at such a young age really blew my mind! I’m excited for what’s next.
