Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Sullins.
Amy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My photography story started when I had children. I was a young mom and had very few portraits of myself from my childhood. I quickly became obsessed with learning and capturing every moment of my children’s lives.
I studied and crafted my skill for years as an amateur photographer. Shortly after a move in ministry to Alabama, families began asking if I would photograph them or their children. After much prayer and consideration, I felt I had crafted my skill for long enough to walk through the door of this new adventure. Little did I know I still had many years ahead of learning and growing to be where I am today. However, I am thankful for the confidence those parents and friends had in me back in 2011.
My husband, Josh, is my right hand! Even though the business holds my name, my husband is my business partner and we are a team on wedding days. I couldn’t imagine doing it without him by my side.
Today, we sit here in Atlanta. We moved back to Georgia in the summer of 2017. Our business is continuing to grow here in our new town and we are so excited about all to come.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Most people think my position is as easy as taking the photograph, saving it, and sending it to family and friends. Some of my challenges have been tearing down the concept that every picture needs to be posed and that I can photoshop anything away. This is especially true when a mom is very self-conscious about her weight or body. I’ve learned to help celebrate moms or brides who are not confident in their own skin. I was once there and it’s been freeing to realize I was created to be exactly who God wanted me to be!
The business side has also been a struggle. Creative people aren’t always the best when it comes to everyday tasks and skills. I come from a long line of successful business owners and I am thrilled to be married to a business-minded man. He helps guide me through the business side of being a photographer and also encourages me to see the business as a part of the creative experience.
Please tell us about Amy-Cole Photography.
Amy-Cole was founded in 2011. My business name was thought through for many years. At the end of the day, we came back to my childhood nickname. My Dad, who is also a successful businessman in Georgia, has called me his Amy-Cole since birth (my name is Amy Nicole). It was perfect and my clients always call me that these days. Nothing makes me happier!
I am known as a wedding and lifestyle family photographer. My family clients have been with me since the very beginning. Most of the children that I photograph weren’t even born when I started, so I’ve been able to capture them since birth.
Wedding photography was a genre that I honestly, never thought I would land. Everyone in the industry would always tell me how stressful and task driven wedding photography was and how my personality wouldn’t fit well there. I shot my first wedding in late 2011 and fell. in. love! My heart started beating for those precious couples who wanted more than a stressful wedding day. I decided to make it my goal to take the fuss out of all the stress from the day and make capturing those days fun and exciting.
Josh (my husband) and I are a husband and wife team on wedding days and in business! I could not do anything without his support and encouragement! He is the biggest asset to me every since day and to my couples on their special day. Josh and I also serve in ministry together and I truly believe this helps us with our couples and their families on wedding days.
Couples are often attracted to my warm, light, and airy style, but I hear over and over again that how I make them feel when they talk to me is why the choose me. I love and adore my couples. You could call them at this very moment and they will all tell you that I love them deeply… and I do. We’ve spent intimate moments together and they are some of my very best and closest friends. It is most definitely what sets me apart.
At the end of each day, I could tell you about the awards and places I’ve been published, but nothing means more to me than the relationships with my families and couples I photograph. It’s the best prize I could receive.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Honestly, I wouldn’t do anything differently. Every moment of doubt and mess-ups have made me better. I have learned to trust my gut on how I book my clients and to also trust them in why they’re choosing me.
Amy-Cole is better because of the mistakes and moments of doubt. It’s forced me out of my comfort zone and made me fight for each wedding day and business decision! I am proud of my business and who I am today because of it all!
