Today we’d like to introduce you to William Brust.
Our journey began in July of 2019 when Chuck Milton came to William Brust with a vision: A group home focused on men with children struggling with situational poverty in recovery in the Roswell/North Fulton area.
Meanwhile, William had long pondered ways to help. He envisioned a home serving others struggling with situational poverty, organized around Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: A facility which would provide for the client’s physical needs before encouraging them toward pursuing greater education, vocational training, and self-empowerment.
These two visions came together to form William’s House, a recovery center designed to empower men with children in recovery experiencing situational poverty to work a track to self-sufficiency. We’ve met with over 200 politicians, nonprofit organizations, and community leaders, learning as we go to perfect our work. We are currently serving three families of men with children who would otherwise have no place to go.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
United Way initially had informed us we’d have to be in existence at least three years before they would consider funding, but we did manage to convince them to fund a study for us to determine the need in north Fulton County. We are happy and honored to have been able to serve our community with love and dignity.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a grant writer and co-founder for William’s House. I love writing and acts of service, and grant writing lets me do both of those things. I’m kind of a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to nonprofits, which allows me to help in a lot of different areas, including fundraising, content creation, and business development.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Right now, I’m listening to Amanda Day’s Fundraising Hay Day podcast, and I’ve been attending webinars through Instrumental, Grants Magic U, and Bloomerang.
