Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyla Njeri B.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story roots back to my various talents and interests I’ve had as a child. I have always had an urge to perform and be a part of telling a story. It started with theater, dance, and choir. Which transitioned into me starting my own YouTube channel showcasing my story. That! Is where I’ve learned I love to influence people in a positive way through my perspective and/or life experience.
When my college journey began, it seemed the odds were against me. Graduating high school and starting college in the year 2020 during COVID-19, one of the most trying times in the nation’s history. Drove my undying fuel to reach for the limitless world of opportunities my HBCU, Delaware State University has been able to open based on my tunnel vision work ethic. After collecting my Associate’s Degree in 2021, I wanted to engulf myself in creating opportunities. Not only for myself but for other students as well. I noticed there was a lack of social media presents within the university. I then began working with the TV station (DESU-TV), becoming the Programming Producer, growing the page to receive over 100,000k impressions and 1,000 new followers in less than a year. My driven nature awarded me an opportunity to be a panelist on “Hornets in Media ”, with Award Winning DSU alum Jamila Mustafa. Fueling my “I can and will” mentality.
Since then, I have been featured on an episode of Jamila Jams on Sirius XM. A media crew member for HBCU Week Battle of the Bands at Walt Disney World. Conducted celebrity interviews with Nardo Wick and Meek Mill during DSU’s Homecoming concert. Showcased as a star student for a Footlocker Campaign Ad, and I was able to be a student journalist representative at the HBCU White House press briefing with VP Kamala Harris and past ATL mayor and a member of President Biden’s Export Council Kesha Lance Bottoms.
Since graduating from college in May 2023, I have started my own Podcast (CHAT’N The Podcast), where I am able to freely discuss the reality of the society we live in today. It’s all about real talk, from real people, with real perspectives, and having the real conversations that matter. As it relates to race, class, entrepreneurship, education, and so much more. I was so excited to begin the journey with my podcast because I know that in order to change the world, you have to affect the minds of those that live in it. That is my goal with my platform to shine a light on the conversation most people are afraid to have because I know this is my way to impact the perspectives of others in the world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has definitely been fun to live through. Covid-19 taught me alot about myself because it allowed me to focus on the plans I had for the future and remove all distractions. I spent a lot of time recording and editing YouTube videos, and as crazy as it may seem I went into college with the basic editing fundamentals. A struggle would honestly just be me finding my way. I’m beginning to learn that in this life, we don’t have to have it all figured out. But we must follow behind our gifts and passions, and that is exactly what I’m doing. Simply because I’m God’s vision for my life is bigger than just me! I will work to have an impact that can present a new perspective to people.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’d like to think of myself as a creative director in all things media. From social media to media outlets, I love to showcase the moments of other’s successes. I found my passion for writing stories when interning for The Link Entertainment, where I was able to write multiple published articles. For me, it sparked a mindset that it was attainable for me to have the influence I aspire to have in the media industry.
As an individual, a part of Gen-Z, I’ve come to understand that in order to change the world, you have to affect the minds of those who live in it. A crucial community and international issue is misinformation through the media. I plan to create pieces of media which highlight the true essence of the world around us in an unbiased, non sugar coated, educational way. Some of our world norms such as countless shootings, racism, and economic prejudices need to be constantly highlighted because in order to affect change in the future, we have to fully understand where we came from.
To know and learn our own history is crucial to self and cultural identity and is what makes us the people we are today. Specifically in the media, I find it so important to highlight Black culture because less than one hundred years ago, Black culture was suppressed and mocked as histaria to Americans. With that idea in mind, I know that in the past the media has been very biased, solely highlighting the majority culture and flatlining all other cultural uplifts. Already setting a certain precedent within the film industry, which is what I hope to revolutionize.
Diversity doesn’t just relate to just race; it is related to age, sexuality, interests, culture, and much more. I want to be a way maker that invokes diversity in media and entertainment by creating content that highlights the factors that define our diversity and also correlating how we are all similar within our diversities. Which is so important in today’s society because representation is everything! I strive to be a boundary-breaking storyteller!!
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I love spending time with my family and any part of my village!! They mean the world to me, and their support is literally the fuel for my determination to be impactful. I also really love painting in my free time. I’m just a very visual person, and painting is therapeutic for me because it allows me to visually express whatever I may be feeling.
