Rising Stars: Meet Katherine Nichols

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Nichols.

Katherine Nichols

Hi Katherine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I’m the author of Southern suspense with heart and humor. My novels include The Sometime Sister and its sequel, The Substitute Sister, as well as The Unreliable, Trust Issues, and False Claims (the first of the Lucy Howard mysteries). The second in the series, Canceled Policies, will be out in October. My female protagonists navigate dangerous, unfamiliar territory and come out with an unbreakable sense of self. Helping women discover their inner strength has always been one of my passions. In the second grade, a boy body-shamed one of my friends.

I knocked him to the ground, sat on him, and demanded he take it back. The teacher pulled me off and scolded me by saying ladies didn’t act like this. I replied, “I don’t want to be a lady.” I don’t pummel people on the playground anymore, but my heroines do. As a co-founder of the critique group Wild Women Who Write, I help my fellow authors develop their work, and they return the favor. We went rogue with Wild Women Who Write Take Flight, a podcast dedicated to giving authors a voice.

I serve as vice president of The Atlanta Writers Club and on the board of Sisters in Crime Atlanta. When I’m not spending time with my children and grandchildren or in a writing frenzy, I love to read, walk, and travel. I live in Lilburn, Georgia with my husband, two rescue dogs, and two rescue cats.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Writing has always been my passion. Life, however, got in the way. I spent thirty years teaching high school English and loved it. Along the way, I became a single mom, remarried, and raised a family. I loved every minute of the journey, but it left little time for me to write.

After reading and reviewing student writing and teaching the literary greats, I retired and decided if I didn’t start writing now, my stories might never be told. I’m telling them now, and I love it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I write Southern suspense with heart and humor. Although my characters live in the South, everyone can relate to their spirit and unique perspectives. I put ordinary women in extraordinary circumstances and watch them grow.

They become part of something much bigger than their own lives and accept the challenges that come with these situations. I’m proud of the sense of empowerment they feel from solving a mystery and taking charge of their own lives in the process.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Perseverance has been the key to getting a publisher for my novels and for continuing to write.
