Today we’d like to introduce you to Helene Saucedo.
Helene, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was working as an Art Director at a publishing company in NYC when I became pregnant and had to make the decision whether to raise my kid in NYC or move back to what I considered home in ATL. Long story short, ATL won out and I put my design career on hold while I stayed home with the babe. After two years I wanted to break out of the mom mold to find work but my perspective had changed on what my career path would be. I’ve always been a new age-gothy-Cure-listenin’ type of chick, so when my good friend Julie were chatting about what Atlanta was missing and Palm Reader came up, I said THAT’S IT! Without really understanding what I was in for Julie gave me a deadline to read palms at a Christmas pop up at Commoner Salon in L5P one month later. When I started studying about the art and science of Palmistry I was overwhelmed. There are a lot of pieces to doing a palm reading – the lines, the mounts, the hand shape, the fingers, the fingerprints, even the fingernails! And all of those elements come together to tell a story. Then there’s delivering that information to a client, and it can get pretty deep and personal. I didn’t feel ready for the pop up so I designed a cheat sheet for myself with some of the pieces on it, and I would ink the clients hand as a take away. My first readings at that pop up cost $5 a pop and all of the feedback I got was supportive. Folks LOVED the take away sheet. So I ran with it. I formed a relationship with the amazing ladies of Seed to Star Collective in Avondale Estates and started taking clients there on the weekends. In the midst of all of this I was going through a divorce and bought a magically renovated 1955 Dalton camper. The next step was obviously doing readings in the camper!
Social media played a huge role in the development of my strange little business. I found a beautiful community on Instagram and my clientele fell into place. Kelley of Modern Mystic reached out to me after seeing my prints in her social feed, and she and her husband Brandon welcomed me into her shop to do readings on Saturdays. Now I’m signed up to read at festivals and events throughout the summer in and around the South.
It’s been an incredible journey and I’m #blessed that I get to meet hundreds of people and hear their stories. I want to make them feel heard and understood and loved. In that way I consider myself a healer. I’m constantly striving how to grow in this field. I just returned from a workshop in Vermont where I learned how to interpret fingerprints into a “soul psychology” system. In June I will be going to an energy retreat in Asheville with the psychic Janet Raftis and her partner Scott Hall to connect with my intuitive abilities.
I believe in Palmistry 100%. With every client I am stunned at how accurately our hands describe who we are, where we’ve been and where we are headed. Like Astrology or Tarot Cards, it’s a tool of self-reflection, but it’s tangible. I am NOT a psychic. I have learned how to read what YOUR hands have to say. The magic is in you.
Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part my clients have been a dream. But I’ve run across a couple who were challenges. They had the expectation of wanting a palm reading to answer very specific questions or wanting a life altering psychic experience. That’s not what Palmistry is about at all. I can’t or won’t tell you when you will die or if you should leave your husband. That is too much responsibility and I don’t want anyone to manifest anything negative in their lives because of me.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Handful of Stars Readings story. Tell us more about the business.
People love the take home prints. I’ve been sent photos from folks who have framed them. It’s flattering to think my clients feel it’s that special. I’m also glad my art school education has come into some use!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think we’re going to see a resurgence of Palmists/hand analyst. It’s been a quiet art for a long while, and hasn’t been brought to the mainstream “hip” crowd. I’m changing that and I see a huge interest from young people in learning the art.
