Meet Tey Lawson

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Tey Lawson.

Tey Lawson

Tey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My dance career began to blossom while studying at Alabama State University, where I had the opportunity to lead the Sensational Stingettes during the 2016-2017 band season.

It was, quite literally, the most challenging yet rewarding experience I had faced at that point in my career. Once my captain season was complete, I graduated in Fall 2017 with many life lessons, my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA) in Dance, and my eyes set on Atlanta, GA, to pursue my dreams of dancing at the professional level.

A few months after transitioning from Huntsville, AL, to Atlanta in 2018, I broke into the industry after attending an open call for a local talent agency. That audition changed my life and allowed me to perform in the TV series “American Soul” as an Ikette (Tina Turner’s backup dancer), along with several cameo appearances in Star on Fox. After that, I went on to cheer with the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders and traveled internationally as an ensemble dancer for Norwegian and Disney Cruise Line from 2019-2023.

While working between gigs, I found a passion for dance education, adjudication, and mentoring. I frequently teach HBCU dance line choreography and technique classes to majorette dance teams and provide resources to coaches and dancers who desire to perform at the collegiate and professional level through my business, Laws on Dance.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Man, I’ve definitely hit some potholes along my journey, to say the least. Like many movement artists, I’ve had to navigate rejection, comparison, body image issues, and criticism.

Over time, I’ve developed coping skills that help me stay positive and not take things personally. I believe that “genuine artistry begins when insecurities end” so I advise defining who you are so no one can tell you who to be.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Many know me as a professional dancer and coach that specializes in preparing majorette dancers for collegiate and professional dance opportunities. I love what I do and I am grateful that I can pour into the next generation of movement artist.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Professionally I am a dance educator and mobility coach accredited through NASM, CPT and StretchLab Huntsville. I am a lifestyle content creator who creatively encourages people to love God and themselves through various content on beauty, faith, and wellness. You can think of me as your bestie in Christ!
