Today we’d like to introduce you to Corwin Weik
Hi Corwin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The Athens Skatepark Project was formed to represent the Athens Clarke County Area Skatepark Community. We are a nonprofit 501(c)3 organized by skatepark users for skatepark users, to advocate and to fundraise for World Class Skatepark facilities in and around the Athens Area. The goal is to have diverse, inclusive, state of the art skatepark infrastructure spread throughout the entirety of Athens Clarke County.
Officially formed in May 2024, the efforts to get this project off the ground can be traced as far back as 2010.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
2024 has been a smooth road with the current team, but nearly 10 years of attempting to do this on my own was not as smooth of a road. The Athens Skatepark Project is my 3rd attempt at organizing skatepark building in Athens, Georgia.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Athens Skatepark Project?
We are a Non Profit Organization looking to expand the Athens-Clarke County Skatepark community and skatepark accessibility. We formed to fundraise and to advocate for community base that has long been underserved. We host events that fundraise and spread the message of positive impacts that skateparks bring. From skate contests, to Flea Market pop ups, to parade appearances, The Athens Skatepark Project aims to be involved in all aspects of the Athens-Clarke County culture while representing the Skatepark Community.
Readers can directly contribute to the cause by donating to our PayPal or Venmo. Donations can be written off due to our Non Profit 501(c)3 status. They can visit our website and fill out the surveys on our page to support. They can also buy a t-shirt and sign up to become a registered member of our NonProfit.
As President, I am most proud of my team. As an individual my voice only carries so far, but with the people who have volunteered their time to be on our board, our collective voices turn into shouts that echo throughout that community and can not go ignored. My team and the community we represent and are building upon is what i’m most proud of.
What matters most to you? Why?
As an organization, spreading the message of how skateparks positively impact youth development and youth communities through the ability to be exposed to positive role models and examples of how to live happy, stable lives from people they meet at the skatepark. As an individual that was raised by a single mother, the skatepark and the community that surrounded it gave me the examples of how to live a fulfilling life despite whatever “set backs” may be in the way. Skateparks not only provide the ability to experience positive role models to the youth but also gives them a place to experience a multi generational community to grow in and a place where they actually belong and are accepted for being themselves.
