Today we’d like to introduce you to Lenee Patterson.
Lenee, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am a self-taught Columbia based artist. My love for art started as a young child as soon as I was able to hold a pencil. During my senior year of high school, I took an interest in graphic & web design. I decided to teach myself everything from watching YouTube to reading various books. My love of art continued to grow, even throughout my college career at South Carolina State University where I pursued a degree in marketing.
In 2007 I started my very first freelance graphic design business JP Media and worked closely with Ladyboy entertainment (along with various other entertainment companies) doing their club promotion work; Although I had developed a love for graphic design and helping people grow their small businesses, I still felt as though something was missing. In 2015, I decided to go back to my first love of sketch art, but this time with a twist. I started experimenting with different mediums, because I did not want to be tied down to just one art style. Not only did I start expanding in my art, but I also decided to re brand JP Media into J.Lenee Creative and help others grow their businesses as well.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I consider my pieces urban and imaginative, more so focused on the female/goddess figure, and of course the majority of my pieces are melanated. My message with my art is to have women of color to realize they are BEAUTIFUL, despite what society says about us.
How can artists connect with other artists?
NETWORK! When I first started my artistic journey, I was a bit shy, however as time went on I realized the importance of getting out and actually connecting with people. not just artists. I’m still kind of shy, but it’s gotten better over the past year and a half which has opened me up too MANY opportunities!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My work is on Instagram Jleneecreative, Facebook at Jleneecreative, and my website Jleneecreative.com.
