Today we’d like to introduce you to Fan Tang
Hi Fan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been passionate about illustration since childhood, which led me to study Game Art Design at the China Academy of Art. After graduation, I worked as a freelance illustrator, creating commercial illustrations for packaging, posters, animation, and more. Despite facing financial constraints and challenges, I pursued my dream and applied for an illustration program at Syracuse University in the U.S.
During my studies, I explored the connection between traditional Chinese art and contemporary design, developing a unique artistic approach. My work often incorporates elements of nature and sustainability, reflecting my deep concern for environmental issues. I believe that illustration is a powerful medium for storytelling and awareness, and I strive to use my art to inspire conversations about our relationship with the environment.
I continue to create illustrations that merge cultural heritage with modern aesthetics, aiming to make art both meaningful and impactful. My goal is to raise awareness about environmental sustainability through visual storytelling and design.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has not been smooth. One of the biggest challenges has been financial constraints. Pursuing art and illustration requires significant investment in education, materials, and software, and as a freelance illustrator, income can be unpredictable. I had to balance my studies and freelance work to support myself, which was often exhausting but also rewarding.
Another challenge has been adapting to a new environment. Moving to the U.S. for my studies was both exciting and overwhelming. Language barriers, cultural differences, and adjusting to a new academic system required time and effort. However, these experiences have made me more resilient and helped me grow both personally and professionally.
Additionally, as someone passionate about environmental issues, I sometimes struggle with how to make my art more impactful in promoting sustainability. Finding ways to integrate meaningful messages into commercial projects while maintaining artistic integrity is an ongoing challenge, but one that motivates me to keep improving.
Despite these struggles, I have learned to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Every obstacle has shaped my journey and strengthened my passion for illustration and storytelling.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an illustrator and visual artist with a focus on commercial illustration, packaging design, and visual storytelling. My work is rooted in both traditional and digital techniques, allowing me to create versatile and engaging illustrations that serve different purposes, from branding to editorial design.
One of my strengths is adaptability—I enjoy experimenting with various artistic styles while maintaining a strong narrative-driven approach. This flexibility has enabled me to work on diverse projects, including collaborations with brands, cultural initiatives, and environmental campaigns. I am particularly drawn to themes of nature and sustainability, often incorporating organic elements and thoughtful compositions into my work.
What makes my work unique is the way I blend artistic expression with functionality. I strive to ensure that my illustrations are not just visually appealing but also serve a purpose—whether it’s enhancing a product, telling a story, or inspiring awareness. Seeing my art being used in real-world applications is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I often find inspiration from social media, especially Instagram and Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book), where I follow many talented illustrators from around the world. Seeing their work and creative processes helps me explore new artistic directions and stay inspired. Xiaohongshu, in particular, provides a unique mix of creative insights, industry trends, and behind-the-scenes content from other artists, which I find very helpful.
To organize my visual inspirations and references, I use VizRef, which allows me to collect and arrange images efficiently. This helps me structure ideas for new projects, experiment with different compositions, and refine my artistic vision.
For digital illustration, Procreate is my main tool. It provides a flexible and intuitive workspace, allowing me to experiment with different styles and techniques while maintaining a smooth creative flow.
By surrounding myself with visual inspiration and using the right tools, I continue to push my artistic boundaries and develop unique, impactful illustrations.
