Rising Stars: Meet Nick Johnson of Atlanta, Ga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Johnson

Hi Nick, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in the audio engineering world for a little over 10 years now. I got my start in Chicago, the city I grew up in, working at Classick Studios while also pursuing my education in audio. From a young age, I was fascinated by both technology and music—I loved building and taking things apart just to see how they worked, and I was always drawn to the way music could evoke deep emotions. When I discovered that audio engineering combined both of these passions, I knew I had to dive into this world.

I started with schooling and interning, which I believe laid the best foundation for me. Learning the technical fundamentals in school, combined with real-world experience sitting behind engineers and watching how they ran sessions, really solidified my love and appreciation for the craft.

Over the years, I’ve worked in cities like Cleveland, Baltimore, L.A., my hometown of Chicago, and now Atlanta, where I currently reside. I’ve worn many hats—intern, assistant engineer, junior engineer, in-house engineer—and have also been involved in marketing and client relations along the way. Each of these roles taught me something invaluable, whether it was how to communicate effectively with artists, manage sessions efficiently, or refine my technical skills. All of these experiences now play a huge role in my work as a full-time mixing and Dolby Atmos engineer, allowing me to not only deliver high-quality mixes but also create a smooth and professional experience for my clients.

Recently, I transitioned into a full-time role as a mixing engineer, doing most of my work from my professional home studio. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited for this next chapter of my career.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve had my fair share of struggles as an engineer. This is a client-based profession, and early on, before you start getting real opportunities, you often have to work for free—interning, assisting, and offering free work to artists just to build relationships. It’s understandable—music is personal, and artists are protective of their work. Before someone trusts you with their art, you have to earn that trust, and sometimes that requires sacrifice.

But my love for engineering has always fueled my desire to keep pushing forward. I genuinely enjoy every aspect of it, and that passion has kept me going through the challenges. When you truly care about the work, people see it, and that helps build lasting connections.

Another challenge is that this field is highly subjective—not everyone is going to love the work you do. And that doesn’t necessarily mean you made a mistake or that you’re a subpar mixer; it’s just the nature of the business. Music is about personal taste, and I’ve learned to remind myself that I’m in the service industry. Taking my ego out of it and focusing on delivering the best possible experience for my clients has been crucial in navigating this journey.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a mixing and Dolby Atmos engineer specializing in hip-hop, R&B, and pop. My work focuses on bringing records to life by enhancing clarity, depth, and emotion, ensuring that every song connects with the listener the way the artist intends. Over the years, I’ve worked with a diverse range of artists, helping them achieve their unique sonic vision while maintaining the highest level of professionalism and creativity.

One of the things I’m most proud of is my ability to bridge the gap between technical precision and artistic expression. Mixing isn’t just about making a track sound good—it’s about understanding the emotion behind the music and bringing out the best in every element. Whether it’s a punchy rap vocal, a lush R&B harmony, or an immersive Dolby Atmos experience, I take pride in crafting mixes that feel dynamic, polished, and impactful.

What sets me apart is my deep understanding of both the creative and technical sides of music. My background in recording, mixing, and even aspects of studio design allows me to approach every project with a well-rounded perspective. I’m also highly detail-oriented and committed to providing a seamless, collaborative experience for my clients.

Above all, what I’m most passionate about are the relationships I’ve built through engineering—both with artists and fellow engineers. Music is a collaborative art form, and I truly value the connections that come from working closely with creatives who share the same love for the craft. Building trust and understanding with artists allows me to bring their vision to life in the most authentic way, and the friendships I’ve formed in this industry continue to inspire me every day.

At the end of the day, my goal is simple: to help artists bring their music to life in a way that resonates with audiences and stands the test of time.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest advice for those just starting out is to have fun, enjoy the process, always keep learning, and leave your ego at the door. Sometimes the best way to get somewhere is sometimes slowly. Embrace the challenges because they will make you better. Every setback and so-called “mistake” I’ve made has ultimately helped me improve, and I wish I had understood that earlier.

When I first started, I was hard on myself, always chasing perfection. But over time, I realized that imperfections are what make music feel human and beautiful. Instead of stressing over getting everything exactly right, I learned to trust my instincts and let creativity flow naturally. Some of my best work has come from moments when I was relaxed and just in the zone.

So, my advice? Stay curious, be patient with yourself, and most importantly—have fun. The more you enjoy the journey, the better your work will be.
