Conversations with Ayomikun Omolayo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayomikun Omolayo.

Hi Ayomikun, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into photography began unexpectedly in 2017, during my junior year of college while I was studying Chemical Engineering. I was not making much money at the time, but one day, a church uncle who is a photographer invited me to assist him at one of his gigs.
Interestingly, I was not there to take photos; my only job was to move his tripod around as he worked with another camera. He took a moment to show me the basics of how the camera operated, and right then, something within me clicked. My curiosity was sparked.

At the time, I did not do much with that new interest, mostly because I did not own a camera. About a year later, I was finally able to save enough to purchase my first DSLR, and I began experimenting. I took photos at my local church and captured moments for close friends and family. Little by little, I started finding my footing and falling in love with portrait and event photography.

Although I successfully completed my degree in Chemical Engineering, my passion for photography continued to grow stronger. It was not until 2022 that I truly “locked in” and decided to pursue photography seriously. I was fueled by a deep desire to build a brand for myself. I poured myself into YouTube tutorials, followed other photographers on Instagram, and even took a photography lighting course to sharpen my skills. Even today, I continue to study, network, and attend seminars to keep learning and growing.

Photography has become more than a craft for me; it is a true passion. I often dream about unfinished edits and new ways to push past creative blocks. By God’s grace, I have seen steady growth in both my craft and my business, and I am excited for what is to come.

Looking ahead, my next two goals are to establish myself in the wedding photography space, and to launch 1-on-1 coaching sessions for young, aspiring photographers, helping them grow their skills much faster than I did.
Through it all, I know I would not have made it this far without God’s unwavering guidance and grace.

Every opportunity, every challenge, and every moment of growth has been a testament to His faithfulness. Photography has allowed me to capture precious memories, not just for others, but also within my own heart.
I am only just getting started. I look forward with great excitement to all the memories that the MomentsbyMikun brand will help create, celebrate, and preserve for years to come. The journey has been incredible, but the best is truly yet to come.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been a smooth road, but it has definitely been a meaningful one, full of blessings and growth opportunities. From learning which editing tools to master, to figuring out lighting setups, selecting the right jobs, setting my prices, and building a brand presence, every part of the journey has stretched me and taught me something valuable.
I have had to experiment, fail, adapt, and improve in every area. Along the way, I adopted the mindset that I am a lifelong student of the craft. With that perspective, there is no final graduation and, more importantly, there is no such thing as failing out. Every experience, even the tough ones, has become part of the foundation that shapes me as an artist and professional.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in portrait and event photography including headshots, milestone photoshoots and celebrations, branding sessions, weddings, and private parties. My artistic style is vibrant, natural, and timeless. I focus on capturing authentic emotions in a way that feels both fresh and unfading, because I believe that only a moment captured right is truly free.
One of the things I am most proud of is my ability to transform a simple or distracted scene into a finished photo that feels intentional and artistic. While the final images may appear effortless, there is often a lot of creative work behind the scenes that brings them to life. I enjoy the process of elevating ordinary moments into lasting memories.

What sets me apart from others is my commitment to both quality and efficiency. I consistently deliver high-quality photos before the promised deadline. My clients often tell me how much they appreciate not only the quality of the images but also the speed and professionalism of the entire experience.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am not sure how surprising this is but, I love the camera, just not being in front of it
