Today we’d like to introduce you to Erykah Storm.
Hi Erykah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi VoyageATL,
Im Erykah Storm, Atlanta based Makeup Artist & Esthetician.
I’ve always loved fashion and film from a young age. Watching tv shows like “America’s Next Top Model” or “Project Runway“ and movies like “Devil Wears Prada” made me fall in love with the process of creation! So much so that i started up-cycling my wardrobe, taping Vogue and Elle magazine covers to my bedroom walls, all while playing with any makeup i could get my hands on.
I started practicing makeup on my friends while i was in high school and once i graduated i started booking clients to build a clientele. During the time i was navigating the beauty field as a MakeupArtist, a lot of my clients would voice the same skin concerns when sitting in my chair. Usually they would want to conceal their unwanted hyperpigmentation or ask how to get that glass skin look without any makeup.
Skincare has always been a passion for me because of my own skin journey so I’ve always prided myself on being knowledgeable on the topic. One day while researching some products for hyperpigmentation, i happened across an ad for esthetics school enrollment! At first i thought it was just good advertising because I had no idea that you could pursue a career in skincare without being a dermatologist. So, i took that ad as a sign to go bigger and dig deeper into my passion. So i went back to school, got my license, and started utilizing my new skills and knowledge in my services!
I did not anticipate how tremendously more vast my world of beauty would become. During my time of me being a licensed makeup artist and esthetician, I’ve gotten to work with some incredible brands and creatives. My work led me to opportunities like a commercial for Nike and branding campaigns for Range Beauty, Sephora and Highly Hers. Not to mention the honor of servicing my clients for special moments like weddings, TV show appearances and maturity shoots.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think the biggest struggle for me was just believing in myself. I was doing something that no one else around me has ever done so i wasn’t sure if i could really make it happen for me. So i would constantly have to have those “self business meetings”, to remind myself that i work hard, and these opportunities are happening because i am deserving of it. My partner also encourages me to constantly push past my limits because i can do whatever i put my mind to.
Also i would have to say that getting too comfortable in situations that limited my potential was a major struggle. For me, not knowing when i had outgrown something made it hard to let go. Comfortability was my enemy. Once i released that i was stuck creatively and not pushing myself to my potential i was disappointed at how much i was holding back. I needed to keep betting on myself and mute anyone who tried to box me in.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Id have to say i’m most proud of being able to communicate skincare and makeup in a digestible way.
Im your skin friend and your beauty advocate. Im your homegirl with the bomb makeup looks that can teach you how to achieve those looks for yourself. Your skin is the priority in my career. Doesn’t matter if you’re black, white, yellow, pink or brown, everyone gets the same care in my chair.
Timeless skin focused makeup is my specialty. I love being able to bring a clients vision to life. Art is my drive and as long as i can keep on creating I’ll forever be grateful to do so.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I am a huge comic book fan!
Marvel , DC, even Manga i love them all!
I grew up with a family that loved and appreciated the art of animation along with its growth over time. So seeing some of my favorite characters, that i could only read about come to life in this day and age is really exciting for me ! I want to one day be apart of the film industry on set of the MCU and be able to say that i participated in making something great !
