Community Highlights: Meet Halima Adewole of Halima Adewole Autism Foundation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Halima Adewole.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into autism advocacy is deeply personal. Growing up, I was often labeled a “slow learner” and struggled with dyslexia, challenges that made me feel different in a world that didn’t fully understand neurodiversity. These experiences shaped my empathy and passion for creating a world where individuals with learning differences, including autism, are seen, supported, and empowered.

With this vision, I founded HAAF to bridge the gap in autism awareness, education, and support, particularly in underserved communities. What started as a small initiative has grown into a movement, advocating for early intervention, access to resources, and the celebration of neurodiversity.

I know firsthand how it feels to be misunderstood, and that fuels my mission every day. Through community outreach, partnerships, and education, we are breaking down barriers and ensuring that no child or family feels alone in their journey. Seeing a child gain access to the right support, a parent find hope, or a community become more inclusive reminds me why I started and why this work is so important.

This journey has been one of passion, persistence, and collaboration. Every child, every family, and every individual touched by autism deserves to be seen, heard, and supported. My goal is to continue expanding this mission, ensuring that awareness leads to action and that no one walks this journey alone.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to building HAAF has been anything but smooth, but every challenge has reinforced the importance of our mission. One of the biggest hurdles has been breaking down misconceptions about autism, particularly in communities where awareness and acceptance are still evolving. Many families hesitate to seek support due to stigma, cultural beliefs, or lack of access to resources, and changing those mindsets takes time and persistence.

Another challenge has been securing funding and resources to expand our initiatives. As a non-profit, we rely on community support, partnerships, and grants to sustain our programs. At times, finding the right avenues for financial backing has been difficult, but the dedication of our team and the impact of our work have kept us moving forward.

Additionally, ensuring that families receive the right information and support tailored to their needs has been a learning process. Autism is a spectrum, and what works for one individual may not work for another. This has pushed us to continuously adapt, learn, and collaborate with professionals and educators to provide the best possible resources.

Despite these obstacles, every struggle has been a stepping stone toward greater impact. The moments when a family feels seen, a child receives needed support, or a community takes steps toward inclusivity make every challenge worth it.
