Conversations with Ariel Cameron

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ariel Cameron.

Hi Ariel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always had an interest in photography, was always the friend documenting our hang outs, etc. But as I grew up a little, I don’t remember ever thinking of photography as a viable career option for me. I pursued other work in marketing, nonprofits, and general business consulting. Throughout each of my career moves, I picked up a few new skills, but most importantly, I also had to pick up a camera again in quite a few of my roles. I started really loving it again and began taking a few online courses to really learn the technical side of photography. All the meanwhile I began planning my own wedding and got married in 2019. Between my wedding, an upcoming move for my husband and I, and the pandemic, it’s all a slight blur but somewhere in that time, I decided I wanted to pursue wedding photography. I knew I loved photography and then coupled with my new love of weddings, it became the perfect career choice for me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We all know no journey ever is ha! Most of my business struggles have revolved around navigating a lot of life transitions while trying to build a business from scratch. A business that I started during COVID when weddings and events were being canceled, then my husband and I moved states, then we got pregnant and welcomed our first child. I was years into my business before I experienced one full year without some sort of major life transition. But in true entrepreneurship fashion, we use those moments to learn and grow from. Each life transition made me more focused, more dialed in, more adaptable, and truly more appreciative for my job.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photographer who specializes in weddings. I’m known for my artistic approach to wedding photography. I asked a few of my industry friends to describe my work and they said – “Nostalgic, organic, and electric.” And those are still the brand words I use today. I’m proud of growing my business while raising little ones. I’m proud of the way I have served my clients. I am proud of the intentionality I have put in to finding my own unique approach to weddings. It’s been a fun journey for sure.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Being really steadfast and holding true to “my why” while being extremely adaptable with “the how.” I think it’s extremely important for leaders/owners to have a true vision that they stay committed to, but knowing how to be adaptable and learning how to evolve and get there is equally as important.
