Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Case.
Hi Courtney, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a strong passion for music. Music is spiritual for me. In my twenties I would often be asked to control the cue in social settings because my friends and family said my music taste was amazing. In my early thirties, a friend was getting down to the set I had cued up at a party. They said aloud ‘Girl, you should DJ’, so… I did! I began by asking local DJs how I could get started and bought the most basic equipment to start trying it out at home. I was terrible at first. I was making awful noise and had no clue what I was doing. My poor neighbors LOL.
I started shadowing local DJs when possible and lived on YouTube to learn technique. I was offered my first gig at Parma Tavern in Buford Georgia and the set was on New Years Eve in 2022. Yikes! Was I ready for this? Absolutely not but I knew I had to start somewhere. Even though I was beyond nervous I played the gig and kept the music going for a four hour set. From there on, I continued to take gigs and to this day learn something new at each one. Forever learning and finding new music is my vibe. I have been playing now for about 4 years and am completely in love.
In 2023 I expanded my journey and collaborated with a dear friend Sarah McKinley to began our girl DJ collective Violet Disco. We found our strength and passion to be Nu Disco. We have worked very hard to create our vibe and are extremely grateful for every single gig we get! Our music taste has no limits and our goal is simple. Make the people boogie! Since we started our collaboration we have been booking gigs all over Atlanta, created a LLC (Courtney Case LLC), and have even had the incredible opportunity to play the opening brunch of F1 Vegas in 2024.
In my opinion the key to a successful DJ is hard work, keeping sets fresh, staying humble, making connections, being kind, and playing for the people. I am where I am today by following this mindset. I am forever amazed by this industry and am beyond excited for what the future holds for myself and Violet Disco. Next goals are to begin creating my own music to share with the world.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has not been easy but it has been SO rewarding. I would have to say that the biggest challenge is getting to a gig, setting up your equipment, and something goes wrong. You have a crowd of people and a set time expected by all. Or, maybe you are transitioning with other DJ’s and shit just isn’t working. The pressure is intense but a sort of high at the same time. My arm pits get sweaty and my face flushes but you have to keep the music going. No matter what the issue may be it’s simply the DJ’s fault to the crowd. You have to learn to laugh it off, pivot, and keep it going somehow. The show must go on.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have worked for Red Bull for almost ten years and am currently a regional on premise manager for the state of Georgia. I manage a sales team of eight people and we are responsible for roughly 250,000 cases annually in sales.
I am known for being a hustler. No isn’t always no, majority of the time it really means just not right now or that the yes is going to be hard work. The sky is not the limit in my mind.
I am most proud of my ability to juggle it all. I am always doing a lot and I do it with a positive and fun attitude. This has allowed me to create lifelong relationships that I cherish deeply.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to listen and lead with intent. I have found success in communication through listening. Listen, retain, think, and then respond.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
My learning style is hands on. Any chance I get to see and touch how something works I am able to grasp it easiest. Shadowing people, observing, and embracing feedback is my key to my growth. Outside of that, any tutorials on social media or online platforms are very helpful. There are tons of insightful videos and trainings on IG and YouTube.
