Meet Mel Crozby of Birmingham, Alabama

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mel Crozby.

Hi Mel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey started in 2014 when a snowstorm hit my city and shut everything down. My job closed for the day and I managed to make to one of my homies crib. We started watching videos on Instagram and noticed one of our other homies had uploaded a video of himself rapping and (jokingly) dissing me. It was also really good lol. I had never written a verse or even attempted to make music before but I felt like I had to respond. I spent the rest of that day writing and ended winning the battle (in my opinion l) with my response video. It was easily the most fun/addicitng thing I had ever done and I haven’t stopped writing since then.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has not been smooth but I appreciate the journey more than the destination. Relationships, imposter syndrome and people pleasing have all been struggles but I have thoroughly enjoyed learning from my mistakes and applying what I learned so I can make the road easier for myself and more importantly for those that walk it after me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a rapper and I’m most known for songs that touch on mental health struggles and empowering yourself. I am most proud of my project “On Purpose.”. I make music in hopes that the listener will feel like they are not alone and know that someone feels and thinks the way that they do.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
When I was little I used to be afraid of thunderstorms. One day there was a really bad one and I was frozen with fear and anxiety. My grandmother pulled me to the side and told me that “April Showers Bring May Flowers” and that quote resonated with me in a special way. That quote let me know that things can get bad but there’s always a brighter tomorrow.
