Life & Work with Rajeev Pillai of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rajeev Pillai.

Rajeev Pillai

Hi Rajeev, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My path has taken me across countries, creative disciplines, and everything in between—shaping my perspective and approach to life. I was born in India, but blinked—and suddenly we were living in Dubai. A few years later, we moved again—this time to Oman. I grew up between cultures, traditions, and wildly different environments—from the warmth of the Middle East to the color and chaos of India. And while I’ve never had a good answer to the question, “Where are you from?—because, well, it’s complicated. I honestly am grateful to have been exposed to so much, so early.

Eventually, I moved back to India to study design—Visual Communication and Strategic Branding, to be exact. It was the perfect excuse to dive into everything I loved: storytelling, visuals, and figuring out how to make ideas stick. After graduating, I worked across a mix of branding, advertising agencies, and tech startups, where I wore a lot of hats and occasionally made up new ones. My passion for exploring diverse creative fields—be it photography, graphic, motion, or experiential design has always been a conscious choice to broaden my skill set and bring fresh perspectives to every project. That versatility and curiosity brought me to the U.S., where I earned my Master’s in Advertising and started working as an Art Director at a creative agency.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t think the road to anything truly worth having is ever smooth. Some call it “character building,” and I’d have to agree—I believe it’s the ups and downs that truly shape growth.—something I first learned while being a competitive athlete in school. It wasn’t about winning all the time but about learning how to bounce back quickly and keep moving forward. That resilience is what eventually leads to the wins that really matter.

One of the more recent challenges was moving to the U.S.—a 20+ hour flight away from everything familiar, with no family on this side of the world. I’ve been lucky to have a close-knit, supportive family backing me from afar, which made the leap feel a little less daunting. Adapting to a whole new culture, pace, and way of life wasn’t exactly a walk in the park, but it came with its own kind of adventure. Having been through so much change before, I’ve gotten used to adjusting quickly, reading the room, and finding my flow—whether in a new city, team, or creative environment. It’s made me pretty adaptable, though I still find myself converting Fahrenheit to Celsius just to make sense of the weather.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a multidisciplinary creative working across art direction, design, motion, and production. I specialize in crafting engaging ad campaigns and shaping the visual language of a brand—how it shows up and makes people feel across different mediums. At the heart of it, I care about connection—through words, visuals, experiences, and everything in between.

What I’m most proud of is being able to move fluidly across disciplines and industries, led by curiosity more than anything else. I pick up things up quickly, and I’ve always had an instinct for using new tech in ways that feel both intentional and unexpected. Pushing boundaries doesn’t always have to be loud—but it should make people feel something.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a kid whose curiosity extended far beyond the usual limits of the school day. I began studying drums at a formal music institute and have been playing for over a decade. Alongside that, I pursued visual arts—painting, photography, and experimenting with design software—always eager to explore new styles and techniques. Competitive basketball, which I played at the national level, grounded me with discipline and a healthy dose of challenge.

Academically, I did alright, though I often found myself at odds with a system—and a mindset—that measured intellect and capability primarily by how well you performed on an outdated syllabus and how effectively you could regurgitate textbook information. The education system left little room for independent thinking or problem-solving, which I found far more rewarding. I was drawn instead to learning through application and exploration. Early on, I recognized that my ambitions wouldn’t follow the conventional path most around me were on—and I was comfortable with that. I understood my goals were aimed at something broader, something beyond what many could immediately grasp.

Thankfully, my parents recognized that too. In a culture that didn’t always fully grasp the value or potential of this career path and its intersection with the future of technology, and innovation—they supported my decision to pursue a path that felt authentic to me. They encouraged me to trust my instincts and carve out my own direction. I’m still on that journey today—constantly evolving, upskilling, and exploring new ways to grow. I believe there’s no room for complacency, and I’m confident that mindset will continue to push me toward new heights.
