Alan Ray White on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Alan Ray White. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Alan Ray, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Yes. The comments made at, and surrounding, my DJ retirement party and dance. I was a DJ here in Atlanta at many of the top clubs for over 5o years and to see so many the folks who attended those dances over the many years show up to send me off and have those who had moved out of town and could not be there say such wonderful things about our time together, gave me a feeling of great pride of accomplishment.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I will be 84 in October and I have just retired after an almost 70 year career in show business as a DJ, radio, television and nightclub performer. I’m fond of saying that I have been in show business all my life, it just seems longer.
At one time or another I was a musician, (drums), a DJ, booking agent, press agent, record producer, businessman and author.
I am now moving on to arranging a podcast to promote my new book about why I believe we need a third political party and how we might build it and win.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
When I was 7, I learned there was no Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy or God. I learned that grown ups will lie to you and you must somehow find your own truth.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
When I was 10 my Stepmother convinced my Dad to put me in military school. What followed was 8 more years of one boarding school after another. It wasn’t jail, the food was better and there was more of it, but it was being ordered around by people who were not related to you and having to deal with bullies, both staff and students, on my own. I never was able to live at home again. I came away from the experience angry and alone. 10 years old is pretty young to be on your own. I don’t know that you ever heal those wounds as much as you learn from them and just find a way to move along.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I have no time for subterfuge. With no education poast the 8th grade, my strong personality and gift of gab have carried me through life.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
What I am doing today may never pay off. But I have learned that if you don’t do something, nothing will happen. I am trying to light the fire to get a full blown, down ticket, middle-of-the-road President to local school boards, third political party organized and built.
