Derek Gibson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Derek, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What battle are you avoiding?
I have a sweet tooth and every day I try to convince myself to give up sugar. It’s a losing battle because I always give in. Now, I just avoid trying. One day, I plan to keep my promise.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Derek Gibson and I am owner of a balloon decorating business, Let’s Go Up! Balloons in Atlanta, and co-owner of a retail florist, Gibson’s Floral Cart, located in South Carolina. I guess the interesting part of being a balloon artist and a floral designer is that they both work hand in hand and can be a great compliment to each other. Being so busy with both businesses can be challenging at times, but is also very rewarding. I love what I do and plan to accomplish so much more in the future.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a kid, I was a very quiet and shy kid. I sometimes felt I wasn’t special enough or good enough to do certain things. As I grew older, my confidence also grew and my parents helped me understand the importance of using the gifts that God gave me. Everyone has a gift, but sometimes we never find out what it truly is because we don’t tap into our gifts or take the steps to build on what lives within us.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
Whenever I was sad or scared, I always knew I had the support of my family to help me through the hard times, even now as an adult. Life can get scary sometimes, but I am resilient and I am thankful to God, my parents and family for their love and support of me and my goals.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I’ve always admired my dad for his character. He is always calm, and doesn’t take himself too seriously. He is also very giving and always willing to help people. I also admire my mother for her determination and never accepting defeat whenever she is faced with a challenge. They are both courageous people and I like to think that they are the reason and I am fearless.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Whenever I leave this world, I hope that people remember me as a good person, and as someone who cared with a loving heart. I like to leave any room a better place than when I entered it. I hope my footprint on this world is remembered fondly by others.
