We’re looking forward to introducing you to Bri Broskie. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Bri, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
The joy in my day is purely music! I’ve recently been inspired by different musicians who just enjoy the art of making music or writing their own stories, or making their own paintings and in this day and age right now, it just gives me hope for humanity!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! My name is bri.broskie, I am a singer/songwriter from Decatur, GA. I am 31 years old and I am a self taught guitar player and music producer. As mentioned in previous interviews, I am self taught on guitar because music was always my first love. I’ve been singing since I was a baby (in my mother’s words) but ultimately, music is what has driven me and gave me the most joy. I began producing my own music in 2017 and I now have over a million streams under my belt and i’ve been mentioned in rooms I was not present in ( I have no doubt) but my brand of producing if definitely lofi-r&b/neo-soul feels, but I love any genre of music. I’m currently releasing a Reprise version of my EP: “Frm: The Beginning” and I have so many features of some exciting excellent artists. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Being a masc lesbian artist is hard enough… like, I have to constantly tell people “oh i’m not this or that and you can’t fit me in a box”, however, I love surprising people. Because once you hear my voice and the way that I sing, i’m not sure how the voice falls onto other ears, but I like to think i’m coming from a different world. Like maybe they feel a flutter in their heart while i’m singing and can feel a creative connection and inspiration. Honestly, that’s all I hope for when i’m on stage. I just want to connect with the outside of my world and invite them into my world and give them a feeling of what it feels like.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I tell this story most when someone wants to get to know me… I was about 9 or 10 years old. My grandmother was a guest pastor at a church —(I grew up singing in her church since I was 4 years old) and when we went to visit the other church, my grandmother asked me to sing in front of all of these strangers that I did not know…. I was terrified. But instead of admitting that, I walked towards the pool pit, whispered in my grandma’s ear and said “I don’t wanna sing”. At the time, I didn’t know she’d be upset. The gospel of the drums and singing took place and we drowned in the sound of the holy ghost. My grandmother later on expressed to me that she was upset and I could see her crying even at the pool pit! But it was mainly because she loved my voice and I was rude for not singing at a church we were guests in. I told her I wanted to be a sketch artist, not a singer. To this day, there have been so many reasons for me to give up but I always think of this story before I decide just that. Her and my family were the first to teach me that I had a special gift and they just wanted me to share it with the world. And I never will.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That you need to be famous or be signed to a label. Even as a music producer myself, I am a freelance musician and if I were to speak to my younger self, I would say to not focus on being seen. Focus on being heard. The music lands upon the right ears at the right moment and once you find your community, you’ll be successful!
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What light inside you have you been dimming?
I have been dimming almost all of my artistry, My acting, my skills in scketching, singing and my musicianship as well. I just would like to practice more outside of my full time work. And never dim light around others because it can inspire someone listening. Also, in my performance skills. Being on stage and being told once before “she belongs on stage”, there is a true superpower there that I intend to own in all of my future endeavors.
