Exploring Life & Business with Cliffany Friend of Jazzy All Over Dance Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cliffany Friend.

Hi Cliffany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey began in 2015, right in my mother’s basement. I moved all her furniture to the side and opened my heart and that small space to children from my church and the daycare where I was teaching at the time. One of the first daycares to give me a chance was ABC Learning Center in Lithonia, Georgia. I started with just seven little dancers, but that small beginning meant everything to me. I had been teaching since I was 15, but this was my first step into entrepreneurship, a 19-year-old with a dream and a mission.
In May of 2015, I held my very first recital at the Conyers Black Box Theater. My dancers performed to “ABC” by Michael Jackson and “Whip My Hair” by Willow Smith. I remember that day vividly because it was the moment I realized my purpose. I felt accomplished, proud, and grateful, it was the birth of something bigger than me.
But my journey wasn’t without trials. Later that year, during homecoming week at Georgia State University, I was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and was shot in the foot while leaving a party. The bullet wasn’t meant for me, but it found me, and I truly believe it became part of my testimony. Despite my injury, on October 15, 2015, I secured my first official studio location, complete with lights, mirrors, and flooring. I was operating on faith and determination, and I knew that what God had for me, no man could take away.
Now, celebrating ten years in business, my studio has grown beyond anything I could have imagined. I’ve produced over ten recitals, hosted numerous dance competitions, and provided young dancers opportunities to perform on grand stages, from Disney World to New York City’s Broadway, and next, we’re headed to Paris!
My story is living proof that when God blesses something, no obstacle can stop it. What Jah blesses, no man can curse.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. There have been struggles from the very beginning. One of my biggest challenges early on was my age. Many people didn’t take me or my business seriously because I was so young. They assumed I didn’t have enough experience or business knowledge, and some even tried to take advantage of that. It was mind-blowing because I’ve always been extremely headstrong, so being “run over” was never an option. Still, dealing with that lack of respect was emotionally tough. I cried a lot in those early years, but I never let it stop me.
I’ve faced many obstacles over time. I’ll never forget our Christmas recital in 2018. After getting approval from the school board, confirming all logistics, and preparing everything, we arrived at the venue only to find it completely empty, the school had forgotten about our event. I was devastated. The show was supposed to start soon, and I had to think fast. But I did what I’ve always done: put on my “big girl” shoes and made it work. Thankfully, I had some incredibly supportive dance parents who adjusted and rallied around me and the dancers. Although I did lose some students after that recital, I kept going and made the best out of the situation.
And of course, like many other entrepreneurs, COVID-19 was one of the biggest challenges of all. In 2020, everything felt uncertain. I didn’t know how I was going to keep my business afloat, but once again, God provided. I continued operating in whatever capacity I could, just enough to pay the bills and keep the lights on. By 2022, I was finally back in full swing with a studio full of children, and that same year, I was able to bring to life the recital that had been cancelled in 2020—The Lion King. That show turned out to be one of my best productions to date.
Through every hardship, I’ve seen God’s mercy and grace carry me. Each challenge has only made me stronger, more faithful, and more grateful for the purpose He placed on my life.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Jazzy All Over Dance Academy ?
My business is Jazzy All Over Dance Academy, located in Conyers, Georgia. I founded the studio in 2015 with a mission to create a safe, empowering, and faith-filled space where children, especially young girls, can discover their confidence, creativity, and voice through the art of dance. We specialize in multiple dance styles including ballet, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, majorette, and liturgical dance, and we cater to students as young as two years old all the way through young adulthood.
What truly sets Jazzy All Over apart is our focus on character development and community. We’re not just teaching dance steps; we’re teaching discipline, teamwork, self-worth, and perseverance. Every dancer who walks through our doors is reminded that they are seen, valued, and capable of greatness both on and off the stage.
Over the years, we’ve built a strong reputation for excellence in performance and heart in presentation. Our dancers have performed in Disney World, on Broadway in New York City, and now we’re preparing to travel to Paris in 2026, a dream come true for many of our students and their families. We also host biannual recitals, majorette competitions, and community parades, providing consistent opportunities for our dancers to shine and grow.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the love, faith, and professionalism that define everything we do. Our studio has been recognized as one of Georgia’s best dance schools and continues to expand its reach through community engagement and youth empowerment. We emphasize giving back, uplifting others, and creating positive experiences that last a lifetime.
What I want readers to know is that Jazzy All Over Dance Academy isn’t just a dance studio, it’s a family, a movement, and a ministry of purpose. We are committed to nurturing the next generation of leaders, dreamers, and performers who will not only excel on stage but also carry confidence, poise, and integrity into every area of their lives.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that might surprise a lot of people who know me or my brand is that I’m actually an introvert. Most people see me at events, interacting with families, dancers, and the community, and assume that I love being “on” all the time. The truth is, I’ve simply mastered the art of excellent customer service and effective communication. Over the years, I’ve learned how to make people feel welcomed, valued, and supported—even when I’m naturally someone who enjoys quiet time and solitude.
Developing that balance between being personable and protecting my peace has been one of my greatest growth areas as a business owner. It’s taught me that you don’t have to be the loudest in the room to make an impact, you just have to show up with heart, consistency, and genuine care.
