Today we’d like to introduce you to Penelope Road.
Hi Penelope Road, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Max, Koan, and James met in middle school and started playing live music together in high school through a rock band program. Charles and Max met at All-State chorus in high school, and we met Anthony in college through casual bands and local studio sessions. After our freshman year of college, James and Max moved into a house on Penelope Road on the West End of Atlanta where we would initially practice and write songs. Our first gig was a Saturday night slot at a nightclub in Buckhead called the Blue Martini, this is where we found ourselves realizing this could go somewhere as we tightened up and continued to write originals. We later started playing for fraternities and smaller venues and had a small local following selling out most of our local shows. Things started to take off as we started to get traction on social media and that has all led to where we are today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a little bit of both. The first big struggle was getting our first EP out. We had to essentially re-record the entire thing ourselves after a rough process at a studio we had been working at. It took us nearly a year to get our first four songs out. Then we got into the realm of touring and had to learn the ropes of dealing with van breakdowns, crappy motel rooms, and crazy venues and people we met along the way. But that’s all part of the fun of it and we wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We think the most exciting part of our project is our hope of combining all of our influences – from retro rock/soul to new indie/r&b artists – into something that feels very fresh and unique. We want people to come to our shows and feel as if they’re at a real concert – everyone playing their instruments and delivering music in a raw, authentic way. A lot of our fans know us from our social media presence, which is a little more broken down and acoustic, but we all have the same dream of playing our music on the biggest stages there are.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
We are all olympic level badminton players. And news flash, buddy: we have new music coming out. Or it might actually be out already in fact.
