Joshua Carter shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Joshua, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. When was the last time you felt true joy?
I feel the last time I felt true joy was with my latest creation back in October. Although it was a minimal concept, the act of creation and the process of fine-tuning the media to my desired look restored a sensation that had been fading. Life and its inevitabilities tend to weigh down the mind and spirit. There are times when I am reminded that the release I feel from those circumstances comes from creating. It’s a realization I am grateful to relive and feel, regardless of how long I may have to step away from my art, that it and I can never be separated.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Joshua Carter, and I’m a Multimedia Artist based in Atlanta, Georgia.
My work primarily focuses on fashion and editorial photography, though I also specialize in filmmaking and video editing.
My creative journey began professionally at 17, but my passion started much earlier, sparked by a childhood fascination with stop-motion animation. That early curiosity evolved into a deep love for cameras, lenses, editing software, and the art of storytelling through visuals.
What sets my work apart is my distinct editing style: a blend of soft, dreamy tones, innovative camera techniques, and bold, dynamic edits. This signature approach allows me to craft visuals that feel both cinematic and emotionally immersive to an audience.
My mantra is simple: I am just here to create.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My mother.
I had both parents in my life; both provided for and worked for my best interest in more ways than I could ever be grateful for.
But I feel my work ethic truly comes from my mom. She’s a natural workaholic, granted, having its pros and cons.
Her drive and determination have been nothing short of awe-inspiring, and they have pushed me to hold these essential values in my own work and life, whether artistic or any other related services.
Other key figures have shaped and refined my work ethic, and they have all combined to form the talented, professional individual I am.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I think suffering is an excellent teacher.
If our lives were all pleasantry, it would make us blind or even ignorant to what life is or can be.
I am no stranger to low points in life, but I feel more resolved through them.
I choose to look at it with the approach of not asking
“Why is this happening to me?’ but “How is this happening for me?”
What is this trying to show me?
What areas of life are being exposed that have flaws?
We all go through suffering, and none of us is immune to it, but the only thing we can change is our mindset and attitude towards it.
When life or the current reality is in destruction, I feel we often neglect that the very pieces left behind are what’s used to create something new; actual creation comes from destruction. This can apply to a multitude of aspects, not just the artistic ones.
Suffering is an inevitable part of the journey; success is the destination.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My friends often acknowledge and admire me for my genuine, authentic nature — something I strive to maintain, even in moments of human error. They note my strong attention to detail as a reflection of my character, along with my willingness to grow through uncomfortable or challenging circumstances.
They would describe me as someone deeply driven by spiritual and mental growth, and equally devoted to the well-being of my friends, family, and those closest to me.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope to be remembered as a kind person.
I feel those who have worked with me have often heard me quote, “I’m just here to create.”
I’m not perfect, for sure — I’m riddled with a few questionable choices — but my ultimate goal has always been to create for the love of creating.
I hope people share stories about how my talks with them inspired, motivated, or just were an ear to listen to them.
I hope people remember, regardless of their malice, I still chose kindness.
I hope people remember that, despite any conscious flaws of my own, I’m only human.
I hope my work can have an impact and inspire others like me to see that it’s possible, whether or not they know my name.
