Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Schulwolf.
Hi Jessie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2007, I started my career as a hairstylist. I spent years finding my place in the industry. My first job was in a corporately owned salon, where I spent about 10 years. For several more years, I traveled on location to style hair for weddings. During this time, I had a growing love for barbering. I began to cut hair at a few local barbershops. Each place was a stepping stone that taught me something different, but I was never completely content working for someone else. I’m grateful for those unsettling feelings of the past, because those feelings pushed me to take a step forward each time. It wasn’t until I opened my own suite, Wild Wolf Barbershop, that every aspect of the business came together. Owning my own space gave me the freedom to create an atmosphere and experience that truly represents me and my clients.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My first challenge was finding out that cosmetology school really didn’t prepare me very well to actually preform services in the salon. I had to stay faithful to learn and grow in the business.
Once I got more skilled in my craft, the next challenge was trying to make a graceful exit to the next job. The “two-week notice” is not smiled upon in the beauty industry. One time I wasn’t allowed to pack my own station and I had to pick up my box of tools from the back door. It’s always weird, awkward or I would just get treated rudely. In the long run, it really helped me to develop some grit.
It’s my dream one day that I can help shake up the hair industry- there’s a need for shop owners that can truly support and guide other stylists and barbers to flourish.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a barber who specializes in men’s haircuts, fades, beard trims and shaves. For me, it’s about more than just the cut — it’s about the connection I have with my clients. I love getting to know my clients, hearing about their lives, meeting their families and creating a space where they can relax.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
When I was growing up, my interests involved art and music- basically any way I could be creative. Fishing was one of my favorite pastimes. I was convinced I would be fishing professionally as a Bassmaster. I was a bit stubborn at times but I would always to find a way to add humor to everyday life.
