Story & Lesson Highlights with Porsha Clayton of Marietta, GA

Porsha Clayton shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Porsha, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
My day starts with me waking up, thanking God for another day and getting ready to take my son to school. Making a cup of coffee before we leave is a must or I’m a grumpy mommy. When I arrive back home, I begin my work day by reading and answering emails. I work from home and enjoy my career in medical education when I’m not in the kitchen baking.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Porsha and I’m the owner of Cake Me Away. I’m a self taught baker and discovered my love of baking when I was in high school. I mainly baked box cakes so I could focus on decorating techniques. In college, I switched to scratch baking because I fell in love with the science behind baking. I decided to transition from hobby baking to a business in 2019. Since then I have been building a reputation on delicious from scratch desserts that not only consistently taste good, but also look good too. My 5 star ratings on Zola, Facebook, and Google let me know I’m heading in the right direction.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Miscommunications and misunderstandings breaks bonds between people —- add in a little stubbornness or ego and even the longest relationships can be broken. I believe that people need to not only know how to communicate but also to comprehend what the other person is saying. Listening to understand a persons “why” will tell you what you need to know so you can act accordingly. Restoring those bonds takes patience, understanding, and humility. Everyone’s got to be on the same side of coming to a resolution.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me patience and strengthened my faith in God. It taught me to focus on what’s really important and to be thankful for what I have. Suffering taught me to trust in God’s timing – no’s and delays can be blessings in disguise. Suffering has taught me to praise him in scarcity as well as abundance. Without suffering, I could never truly enjoy my victories. I’m forever thankful, grateful, and blessed.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to think that if I treat people kindly or with love and respect then they will do the same to me. I learned the hard way that not everyone is you and will not treat you like you treat them. So I still treat people with kindness, but I no longer hold that naive expectation for them. My feelings were hurt a lot less when my expectations changed.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I honestly feel lucky. I have two careers I love. I have worked in medical education for about 15 years and I still find extreme joy in what I do. It’s so fulfilling to me to shape future physicians as well as build relationships with the current primary care physicians in the community.

I also get to run my own business and create beautiful pieces of edible art. I love being a part of people’s special moments. I’m so honored when I have repeat customers and I realize they’ve chosen me for another birthday cake or special event in their life. Kids cakes are my absolute favorite cakes to do. This job gives me a creative outlet and I love trying new techniques to broaden my portfolio.

It can be hectic at times when both jobs are busy but I wouldn’t quit either. They both keep me on my toes!
