Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Key Glover of North Decatur

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Key Glover. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Key, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something that is bringing me joy right now is watching my son evolve into a teenager. How he is still that little boy who wants hugs and kisses. Than his conversation about the world we live in, how his beautiful mind works. As a single mom I feel guilty a lot that I’m not giving enough time, but then God gives me a moment where my son has dedicated his focus and he soars and he’ll say, “ Mom I told you I got it!” The joyful tears that flow is all I need to keep going.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Key Glover is a Master Cosmetologist Educator and 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher dedicated to merging beauty, wellness, and education. She is the proud owner of Key Essentials Hair Salon, a private salon suite in North Decatur where self-care, balance, and holistic beauty go hand in hand.

In 2026, Key will launch her first hybrid training program designed for newly licensed beauty professionals, providing State Board preparation and continuing education units (CEUs) for licensed stylists seeking growth, confidence, and mastery in their craft.

When she’s not nurturing her clients or building future beauty leaders, Key can be found enjoying life’s joyful moments with her son — embracing whatever brings them peace, laughter, and connection.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
As a kid, I was really charismatic and full of energy — I always wanted to try everything. I didn’t care much about labels; I liked “girl stuff,” but I also wanted a Nintendo because I never saw it as just for boys. I dreamed big and truly believed anything was possible if I worked hard and believed in myself. I also knew early on that I was different in my own way, and luckily, my grandmother always encouraged me to be myself.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
One of the biggest wounds I’ve had to heal from was becoming pregnant at the height of my career and being left by my son’s father. It took years to work through, but I can finally say I’m healed and know how to handle my triggers. I owe that healing to God and to my own determination not to give up on myself. I trusted the people God placed in my life during that season, and even though it was humiliating at times and required a lot of vulnerability, I kept showing up. There were moments where I lost faith, but through God and therapy, so much of what I thought I had lost has been restored. Time, grace toward myself, and a willingness to be vulnerable have brought me to the other side of it.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, the public and private versions of me are very much aligned. I’ve always believed in being my most authentic self because I never want anyone who knows me personally to feel like I’m putting on a different persona for work or attention. Staying true to who I am sometimes surprises people, especially when I go against popular trends or expectations. But for me, it’s about doing what feels right and genuine. I won’t say I’ve never faced moments of compromise, but over time, I’ve learned the importance of embracing who you are and being comfortable in your own skin first.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I truly believe I’m doing what I was born to do. I didn’t choose this industry on my own — I prayed and asked God which gift He wanted me to use to bring Him glory, bring me joy, and also sustain me financially. Within days, the answer came, and I was honestly shocked. It was a gift I had always taken lightly, and growing up in Detroit, everyone I knew did hair, so I never wanted to follow the crowd. But I’ve always wanted to live as my authentic self, and now I see that I’m at my most authentic — whether I’m behind the chair, teaching cosmetology, or speaking to audiences. It all still brings me joy, and God has turned it into a ministry that continuously gives Him glory.
