Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Benjamin Davidow of Scottdale

Benjamin Davidow shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Benjamin, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day look like straining to get out of bed straight into a cold shower, several rounds of push ups if I’m feeling spry, feed the dog, make breakfast for my son, get him to school and run back to start a few other house chores, breakfast salad, gratitude meditation, and tea. If I’m real lucky a quick morning hike in some misty woods.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Gas Hound’s Benjamin J. Davidow has performed and recorded at some of the most famous studios in the history of the world including The Beatles’ own Abbey Road Studios in London, UK with famed engineer John Barrett (Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Jonny Greenwood, Paul Thomas Anderson) & mastering engineer Alex Wharton (Radiohead, The Pixies, The Beatles) in addition to Dennis Hopper’s El Cortez Theatre in Taos, NM and Dave Catching’s Rancho de La Luna where he worked side by side with producers and musicians key to Queens of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters, and Eagles of Death Metal such as Catching, producer Chris Goss, and Nick Oliveri.

Davidow has shared stages with Guitar Legend Dick Dale, Yawning Man, Low Cut Connie, White Reaper, The Wood Brothers, Primus, Snoop Dogg, The Dead Kennedys, Truckfighters, Nick Oliveri, Mike Watt of The Minute Men – MSSV, T. Hardy Morris, West End Motel (Brent Hinds), Seven Year Witch, King Tuff, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Resentment and illusive kingdoms of anxious, perseverative thought plant seeds of destruction in the heart of relationships born between beings of light. We must learn to tend to our own garden. Some seeds may struggle more than others to break through the dirt, to fan towards the sun, and others may be out shadowed by larger trees that form the canopy above. However as long as we tend to our own garden, cultivating seeds of gratitude, compassion and kindness, we will then be prepared to take our knowledge and spirit out into the forrest of connection and begin to help with restoration.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I battle that urge every day… I think many people do at least in some sense. I push past it by reminding myself of all the incredible and amazing things around me – mundane magic. Food in the fridge, another chance to see my son excited about a new dinosaur he’s learned about, fresh made pasta and a martini with my wife, a blossoming cloud burst, a nap with my ride or die hound, the anomaly of a flower come to fruition. Unintentionally we tend to numb our minds, and when I’m feeling most numb it’s hard to get motivated. Routine helps, and part of a healthy routine should include non-objective and objective meditation. In this way we can get back to our true nature, where we can give inward without giving out on ourself.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
It’s certainly a fragment of the real me. I couldn’t possibly begin to share my private nature with others because it only happens in private. But I do believe we are always a full version of ourself, no matter what step of the path we are on.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Every song, every piece of art, every poem, every word creates ripples through time. We know not what effect they may have two weeks or 10 years from now. However, I do believe that as I steadily work to continue building a catalogue of work it will be well recognized. My hope is that the humanitarian efforts encapsulated in my work, which are always front of mind, will affect many, many lives in an innately positive way.
