Taylor Potter shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I think this is an intriguing question because if you asked someone outside my circle this question, they would probably assume I’m wandering. In addition to my freelance work, I’m also an adjunct film instructor at Georgia Highlands College and a trip leader for a boutique women’s travel company. At first glance, those jobs seem totally disparate from each other; however, I see them all as stepping stones to my dream job: producing a travel TV show. With that perspective, it becomes clear how each job works wit the others to develop a skillset and network that culminates into one day being a travel TV show producer.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey folks, I’m Taylor Potter. Taylor like Swift, Potter like Harry, I like to say when I’m trying to make a reservation over the phone and the hostess can’t hear me.
I’m a globally-minded, story-focused multimedia business owner. In my business, I run organizations’ social media accounts, write their press releases, capture photos, videos, and drone footage. A lot of these tasks can be done cut and dry, but by applying my background in entertainment and screenwriting, I bring forward a story cultivated from each brand or organization’s history, mission, and goals.
Story is what has always and will always connect us, why not employ story throughout press and marketing to better relate to our audience and capture their attention?
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
For my 25th birthday, shortly after I started my own business, I took a mystery trip (with Journee (not an ad)) and found myself in Slovenia in the dead of winter.
Yes, it was cold, but it was a kind of beautiful I had yet to experience.
At this point, I knew I wanted to travel more and was dipping my proverbial toe into solo travel on this trip. I learned how to travel alone, explore a nation whose language I did not speak, and try foods and experiences outside my comfort zone. I also learned how open so many people are, and how receptive they are to you asking for assistance, translation, or company.
This trip, and all the travel since (19 countries and counting!), has opened the world and my mind. Both are much less daunting, intimidating ideas now, and I have that leap of faith to take a mystery trip to thank for it.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of imperfection.
It’s a struggle even now. I was always the kid striving for an A on my assignments, joining all the clubs and running for office for a few. So, when I start a new project (or business), I tend to hide everything away from the public eye until I feel like it’s “ready” and “perfect.”
What I have learned and what I have to continue to work on is becoming comfortable growing in public. We shouldn’t shy away from growth and the mess that comes with it—that’s where the learning is!
We’re all trying to learn from each other’s successes and failures, so let’s share in the growing pains part too.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Cats, chocolate, and candor.
I am who I am through and through. There is only one version of me, and I will always be honest with you…probably in between bites of chocolate showing you a picture of my cat sleeping.
Humor aside, having integrity, being honest, and straightforward are essential qualities I seek in any of my relationships, personal or professional. Those are guiding lights for how someone communicates and behaves, and they speak loudly about a person’s character. So, those qualities matter a great deal to me.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m traveling! That’s why I’ve become so grateful for my business. It affords me the geographic and scheduling flexibility to travel often and, hopefully one day, use my experiences from it become a travel TV show producer.
