KenDrick Wright of East Atlanta (Moreland Ave) on Life, Lessons & Legacy

KenDrick Wright shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi KenDrick, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes, I would hire myself. With everything I can provide to a business, I would be a asset to any business that hires me. When people get hire that typically attach themselves to their world but in our industry you are your brand. You have to carry yourself as if you a Nike, ADIDAS, Gucci or even LV. Therefore, hiring someone like me would be best for any business with what I bring attached with me.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey there, My name is KenDrick Wright but I am know as REAL INK LORD in the tattoo industry. I have been tattooing for 15 years, I’ve have learned a lot over the years and loved every moment of it. I am from Alexandria, VA, I moved to Atlanta the end of 2019 after audition for Black Ink Atlanta and not getting hired, I found a Home at Atlanta Ink Tattoos & Art Gallery. What makes it interesting is that I get to wake up everyday and be creative. Tattoos are like Therapy to clients and I love networking and meeting/connecting with new people. You never know who you will meet. Not only am I a Tattoo Artist, I paint as well. Attached to my brand REAL INK LORD, is a Anti Broke Artist Club, this brand was build off artist that have love for the artistry they do. Outside of getting better as an artist i am currently working on a Podcast for Creators, I started a few years back but I am picking back up on Season 2 with Creators Talk.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
The world never told me who I had to be but i will say it made me think that it more to life then basketball. Yes, I was a Semi Pro Basketball Player before becoming a Top Notch Tattoo Artist. Outside of being a Semi Pro Basketball Player, I was a Elementary Teacher for about 3 months before I devoted mt time fully to Tattoo only because in this industry you have to give it your all.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes there was, When I moved to Atlanta shortly after CVOID hit and the shop I worked at shut down. Being fairly new to Atlanta my clientele was not stable and having people I didn’t know come to my house. That was something I wasn’t big on doing. It was at a point finding a remote job was an high priority. That was a time I almost gave up on Tattooing.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie my industry tells itself that you have to know how to draw to tattoo. which is wrong, just like anything you can be taught or learn the process.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Yes, when I am booked for an all day session, I’m definitely excited on the inside. Outside of being excited about my day to day projects. I got the call to be on Ink Masters and Black Ink at certain parts in my career but I did not take them due to timing issues on my end.
