Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Whitlock.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Hannah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been very athletic and I love to work out, but after having surgery in my late 20’s, it took a lot of intention to understand how to move again. I wanted to prevent injuries and not feel tight or pain after every workout. I was introduced to Pilates to help me learn how to move again. I fell in love with the method and started teaching Pilates in 2010. Soon after, I also began Gyrotonic, an expansion system to encourage freer movement. I love teaching my clients how to reach their full potential and move in ways they never expected. Movement can change your body, confidence, and outlook on life.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are always struggles with teaching different bodies and personalities, but the more different the body the more I want to understand. This need for logic leads me to get more education and involve myself in more practice to get better for every client that walks in the door. I work with a lot of people who want to feel better in everyday life whether it is balance, strength, or just feeling good when they leave the studio. That is my goal for everyone…. to have a smile on your face, to feel accomplished, and to feel better than when they walked in.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in Pilates and Gyrotonic. My clients tell me that before meeting me they did not know what or where they were supposed to feel an exercise. My goal is to help people be intentional and mindful in their movement so they can feel where the exercise comes from and therefore better results. I give very vivid visuals that my clients always like to hear because they can relate the movement to something they do in everyday life. It is not about the “move” but its more about the technique and where the move originates from.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Macon, Ga. My mother was always exercising when I was younger and I can remember doing exercises with her as young as 5 years of age. She is one of my strongest clients even at the age of almost 80, so I am very inspired by her inner and physical strength. Pilates is for every age and everybody. I have always been active and taught aerobics in college at UGA. I also have a nursing degree from Emory which helps me understand the physiology of the body even more. I love dogs and have a new studio dog named Elsa.
